Scholarship weekend feedback

did anyone or anyone's kid go to the scholarship interviews this past weekend at Kenyon? What was your/their impression of Kenyon and what it has to offer? Still unsure about location....pretty isolated.

shutterbug - did you and your child attend the scholarship interview weekend?

No, my son went alone. He had a great time and was impressed with the school and what they offer. Just a little hesitant on location.

Well, it's good he could spend a few days there so he will have a good basis for deciding whether it is the right place for him to spend four years!

My girlfriend attended the "scholarship weekend" and...decided that Kenyon was a “toilet.” I quoth:
“The dorms were hard-to-find/ filthy/unevenly spaced, and the bathrooms were not well maintained/flat-out repulsive. I almost got lost about campus at night, attempting to find my dorm (both campus and dorm are poorly lit). I was appalled by the fact that there were only four stalls on one floor of a giant dorm. The "world-famous" bookstore was reminiscent of a budget library in a Harlem school that was posted in The Daily News.
The campus was united by one giant dirtpath...which became one giant mudpath because of the crappy weather. The campus was in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a giant moat, which is called Ko-ko-ko-ko-ko-kosing river. (I hope you love menial outdoor activities, because that’s all there is to look forward to for the next four years, prospective students!) The only main attraction was the nearby Walmart, which is in the neighboring hamlet (for it was not a town) of Mt. Vernon, a depressed little village where the livestock outnumber the folk.
My own faculty interviewer lamented the fact that Gambier is right in the bulls eye of culturally deficient rural Ohio. The “food,” she said, is terrible, but that is to be expected. No museums, no good restaurants (i.e. places serving more than pizza and meatloaf), and no movie theaters showing more than the standard fare. For example, on the subject of Hotel Rwanda, ‘they [the populace] would never know what that is.’
Students also complain about the school’s isolation, saying ‘on the bright side, it’s much a summer camp...except for the majority of the year...and there’re four years.’ Some flirt with the idea of drinking themselves into oblivion so they don’t realize where they are, whereas others direct their attention to said ”world-famous” bookstore.
On the brighter side one once more, students tout the fact their school is ‘just as good as more expensive schools, such as Amherst and Swarthmore,’ but in my opinion, I’d rather pay back loans for the rest of my life, for the education and (actual QUALITY) surroundings these schools provide.
At least both the students and the faculty were warm, welcoming, and sweet
I was dying to leave prior to the conclusion of the scholarship weekend.”
Reply with questions, she’ll be glad to answer.

wow i guess she didnt like it. i really dont think it can be that bad though, or else it wouldnt be so popular.

Sean540- your smart-use common sense and don't listen to Carville's post

she does make a valid point about the bookstore; i thought it was hilariously pathetic

I am a Kenyon junior willing to answer questions. I can't say I spend loads of time in the bookstore, but it gets the job done.

Sounds unhappy. So sorry, and I'm REALLY glad I won't be attending college anywhere near her.

Who are u talikng about?

Her account did give an unhappy picture of the SO MUCH loved college. But I have come to know that many undecided prospectives, who had also received placements in the SO CALLED high ranked (Expensive) colleges(Swarthmore, Amherst etc...) turned down these offers and enrolled in Kenyon AFTER VISITING the college.

So, it actually depends on what kind of person you are and how you perceive the isolation. If your girlfriend was a "Oooh MY, I will drown in a mud puddle! How will I cross the road?" TYPE, then I am so glad that she isn't coming to Kenyon.Because She was gonna spoil all the fun we will be having in our MENIAL outdoor activities which includes adventure in the KO KO KO KO Kosing river ( I am not trying to tempt anyone!!!)

Though I must say, she is one hell of a critic. Why don't you invite her to join in CC, that way you won't have to quote her and act as a relay station, all the time. Hope she got into a college which she dreamt of.
:)

"If your girlfriend was a "Oooh MY, I will drown in a mud puddle! How will I cross the road?" TYPE, then I am so glad that she isn't coming to Kenyon."

That really made me chuckle, blip.

I Hope that made him chuckle as well, lainey: no heart feelings JamesCarville!:D

he was just trying to tell another side of the story. it could possibly affect some people who are on the fence positively. it's not necessary to jump on him/his gf for not having the same opinions as you all. especially to insult her character? that's SO unnecessary. some people just don't like rural areas, that doesn't mean she's an awful person.

.........and some people are in love with the college so much that they can be offended when it is called a 'toilet'. The poster should have been conscious of the feelings shared by people, who are already ''in the fence."

PS: There are better ways of pointing out loopholes and weaknesses...It's not necessary to call 'NAMES' and act condescending. I was just returning the favor!!!!:)
Peace V

I personally appreciate hearing other people's opinions and experiences - the good and the bad. To each their own, right? But I think the main point is this: it's good that she did visit and that she realized Kenyon is the wrong place for her. Now her spot can go to someone who is in love with the school.

I don't think anyone was saying she was an awful person. In fact, if she was at the scholarship weekend she is probably very smart.

There's one more think. People tend to exagerate. If she has decided she wouldn't go to Kenyon she exagerated the negative aspects of Kenyon. At the same time everybody that is in love with Kenyon tends to exagerate the best part of it and doesn't even wanna here about the negative aspects. But that's just how man works.

I agree that Middle Path sucks when it rains too much, but it will never be paved, it is a Kenyon tradition. As per Kenyon being a toilet, that is just bs. The buildings here are great...I live in the first American Gothic style building; many others have castle architecture and so on. Also, our new rec center is the size of an airplane hangar and cost a cool $60 million. It should be great once it opens up next year(this could very well be a deciding factor for prospectives).

People are entitled to their opinions, but the alleged review by "JamesCarville" is a deliberate attempt to insult and denigrate a college and a community. There is nothing about it that is intelligent or fair.

Of course, people will disagree about the appropriateness of a particular college for their desires and needs. This is fine. But to sink to this level of "evaluation" (if we can call it this) is rather pitiful.
