Scholarship

What kind of scholarship would I qualify for, if any, with these stats?

SAT (CR+MATH) = 1230
SAT (TOTAL) = 1850
GPA (u/w) around a 3.8
GPA weighted around a 4.3-4.4
I took around 13 Dual Enrollment classes at Valencia
Mostly good grades however I did get a C in a PreCalc class I probably should have dropped.
Valencia GPA around 3.5-3.6

I realize I only qualify for Bright Futures 75% scholarship with those scores. So I was wondering if I would qualify for any scholarships from UCF to cover the rest.

Thanks,
I appreciate any help, please share your opinion.

It’s hard to say about the scholarships - from our tour I got the impression they are somewhat of a first-come, first served type of thing, making them less easy to get as time goes by (or getting less for the same academic standards). When did you apply?

Your GPA is great, SAT score fairly decent as well. I would say it will depend on your application time.

As far as Bright Futures, you only need 40 more points on the SAT CR+M to qualify for the higher award - have you considered taking it again? My son did not do all that well on it the first time and I bought him the book by the SAT people with the practice tests in it, as well as a companion guide by Tutor Ted, and he took one practice test a week for 4 weeks and raised his score by a total of 240 points (including the writing portion). We loved the Tutor Ted book as it pointed out some of the “tricks” they use on the SAT and he learned to recognize patterns in the questions. Just a thought, you are very close. Also he had a much easier time with the ACT than the SAT for some reason.

It would not surprise me if you were offered some type of award, again depending on when you applied. GL! :)

Thanks a lot for your response.
I applied in early November, however, I just send them my SAT score now so I’ve yet to be accepted or rejected. I’m hoping for the best. I would reconsider taking the SAT for bright futures, but the next SAT is Jan. 28 and the scores will probably come mid Feb. which is probably too late for admission. Plus I already missed the SAT registration deadline for Jan. I’ve heard from some people that with 75% bright futures you only have to pay like $1,000 per year so if I get a merit scholarship covering that it would be great.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

NWFLMom - do you have any idea about out of state scholarships? like what stats you need for different levels?

mhmdibrahim,

Bright Futures doesn’t work like it used to a few years ago. 75% doesn’t cover 75% anymore than the 100% one covers 100%. That’s why they changed the names to make it “less confusing.” There is the florida academic scholars award (what used to be called 100%) and the Florida Medallion award (used to be 75%). However, they don’t pay those amounts anymore. Florida Medallion (the one you say you are eligible for) pays the following/ semester hour
:
4 Year $ 76
2 Year $ 47
Florida Public Colleges
(formerly named community colleges)
Associate Degree Programs $ 62
Florida Public Colleges
(formerly named community colleges)
Baccalaureate Programs $ 52
Career/Technical Centers $ 38

The current undergrad cost/ semester hour at UCF is $186.13 (including fees and tuitional differential, of which bright futures covers nothing).

So, if you are going to UCF (on this years data alone, and I don’t know next years data) you would receive $76/semester hour. But the cost is $186.13/semester hour. That’s not paying 75% anymore. :(

Not sure how it’ll work for the coming year, as I don’t know if the legislature has decided how many more changes they’ll make.

zebes

zebes,

Wow! Really. That’s unfortunate. That mean that the Florida Academic Scholar only coves $101 out of the $186, nowhere near 100%.

Anyway, Thanks for your help.

^^^
Good luck with pulling all your aid/scholarships together. :)

amarinello7, I’m sorry that I do not have any info about UCF scholarship requirements either in or out of state. The Bright Futures requirements are clear cut, but UCF’s seem to vary with time or who threw the dart that day, lol.

mhmdibrahim, I am not completely familiar with all the ins and outs of Bright Futures as my oldest is just now applying, but everything I’ve read says you can submit test scores up until graduation. So while a higher score may not help for entrance consideration, it may get you the higher award from the State of Florida. You can still register for the January test for a $26 additional fee. Since the difference in award is currently $25 per credit hour, at approx 120 hours total that would be $3,000 extra for the extra 40 points in score. Might be worth asking a guidance counselor about at least. :)
