Hi I'm an incoming freshman and I noticed that we are supposed to report all outside awards/scholarships to the financial aid office. I heard that checks should be directly sent to UCLA, but I already cashed my check (it was written out to me)...Do I have to write a check back to UCLA, or can I just report the award on my EFAN and use the funds (which are in my account) to pay for tuition? Thanks.

UCLA is not going to hunt you down for the scholarship. The reason why you should report it is because it can then reduce your loan or financial aid, and that loan/financial aid can go to someone else who desperately needs it. Don’t stress about it at this point, it’s not like you’ll get into a heap load of trouble or anything like that.

Yeah that’s what I was worried about, you know, “taking” money from someone who really needs it.

Thanks Ms. Sun! Your blog was incredibly helpful when I was working on my college applications.

You can probably just report the award on eFAN. I very much doubt UCLA will ask you for a check.

I’m really glad to hear you found my blog helpful :)

Surfering, yes, that’s what my son did. He got a scholarship, the check was written out to him, so he deposited it with the other money he’s got saved toward college.

When he got his eFAN, they just asked him to report outside awards, and he did. Later, they sent him a revised award letter, but it didn’t take away any of his meager scholarship money. Probably because they were already having us pay way more than our EFC.

Anyway, don’t worry, they don’t want your check – they just want to get paid when the bills come due.
