Scholarship

How hard is it to get a scholarship at USC, after all, its a very expensive school.
i already read the stuff on their website, but it doesnt say how hard it is to get one (why whould they put it?), thanks for anyone that can help.

hard, but not that hard...heck, i got one.
The three main ones that USC gives out are the Deans, the Presidential, and the Trustee scholarships.
Deans= quarter tuition
Presidential= half tuition
Trustee= full tuition
Generally you'll need over a 1400 SAT. Trustee is the top 1-2% of scores, pres is something like 2-3%. Also, you'll need a good (but not immaculate) gpa and interesting, in depth ec's. There are about 100 trustee scholars each year, 200 or so presidential, and even more Dean's, out of an incoming class of 4000ish. Honestly, I think they draw names out of a hat. Some really qualified people don't get it and some interesting, but not quite as high achieving people do. Seems like they like variety. I got a Trustee Scholarship with a 1530 SAT and a 4.26 gpa (from frosh/soph transcript, because i'm currently a junior). But I also have been scuba diving since I was 8 and now am a rescue diver (not actually as cool/difficult as it may sound), co-founded the girls' lacrosse team at our school, sing/act in my church's choir/drama team, and other stuff that isn't the typical "soccer, student gov, key club." But they really like that stuff too. A girl that I dormed with played basketball and was really involved in ASB and she also got the Trustee Scholarship. So, obviously it's selective, but they take a variety of people. (then again this is coming from someone who never expected to get any sort of scholarship and then miraculously got full tuition, so you'll hear many different views) anyway, good luck.

Ya...you need good test scores(1400+), good GPA (I only had a 3.7), and probably good recs/interesting ECs....and a good interview, as all of these scholarships require on-campus interviews....

BTW, I got a Pres...

Actually, a LOT of weight is put on your essays/interviews for the big scholarships.

If you're a national merit finalist, and you name USC as your first choice school, as long as you're accepted you get a Presidential Scholarship. That's how I got a Presidential scholarship.

i had a 1530 and a 4.25...i didnt get ****.

what about the aforementioned scholarships for transfer students? how rigorous is it?

anyone?***

I'm not sure about transfers....

That is the link to the scholarships page on the USC website...

Although this site is old...sry, I didnt realize that when I posted it...Some of the info might still be correct...

It has "tuition" listed as $25000 and mentions a Competitive Scholarship Application (neither of which are true...)

i got a deans scholarship, and i didn't get interviewed or anything. i just submitted my app by the dec 10th deadline. but anyway it got upgraded to a presidential because of national merit :]

i think it also might be easier for RHP kids to get scholarships too, simply because it makes them stand out a little to the adcoms. essays and recs definitely are important. i was surprised at the detail that a couple of my teachers went into, they were awesome, i dunno about my essay, but I put a good effort into it. i got asked a lot of questions about both during the interview.

Yes, I agree. I thought I had to wait until the fall, when the National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists are chosen, to receive the Presidential Scholarship. But I got a letter saying I got it, no interview required. I would have liked Trustee, but free Presidential? Any day.

If you're trying to get into the film school, don't count on getting a merit-based scholarship. The film school has so few scholarships to give out, and they don't even give out Trustee scholarships. I interviewed for a Presidential scholarship and ended up with... a meager $4,000.

wait...if you're applying to the film school you cant get a trustee scholarship?!?!?! WHAT?!?!?! I AM SCREWED.

even if i get in.

i am very VERY low income.

ugh...

i know a cinema major with a trustee scholarship. it does happen.

Don't worry about it. If you are low income USC covers cost with 100% aid met....usually with large grants and few loans

As put by one of my professors here this semester, "USC is the World's greatest funds redistribution scam."

haha gotta love it.

phew. ok. i feel a little better now.... :)

Yeah, they will meet your need, whether through merit scholarships, grants, or loans. I got the same amount of financial aid in the end, even though they bumped me up from Deans to Presidential, which actually kind of irritated me.

Protokurios, you're from La Palma? Did you happen to go to Kennedy High School?

No, I went to Oxford for 7/8th grade, then took the entrance exam to Troy, where I finished high school. My home high school was Kennedy though, so I know a bunch of people from my elementary school that go/went there.
