My daughter was accepted EA (OOS) about a month ago. This week she received a letter regarding scholarships which she would qualify for. Final award decisions will not be done until February 1st. So far she was offered in-state tuition.

Do you think she has a good chance at getting into the Honors College?

A: Did she apply to the Honors College? It is a separate application.
B: What are her stats?

Also, Honors College acceptances go out in Feb. (except for those who already got them in Dec.) but the award decisions I assume you’re referencing (OoS merit scholarships?) don’t got out till March. They send out that “you’ll get at least in-state tuition…” earlier so you consider them before all the financial stuff comes out since most schools send it out around the same time- in March-April timeframe. It helps you with planning.

Yes, she did apply for the Honors College. Her stats were:

Class Rank: 20 out of 433
ACT: 30
Weighted GPA: 4.37
Took all honors and APs available to her. Lots of ECs and great essays for Honors application.

The Flinn Scholarship is the “lowest” OOS scholarship to fully waive OOS tuition and last year the stats for that were 1338 SAT/30 ACT with ave. GPA of 4.24 which seems pretty close to what your D has. Your final financial package comes out in March. According to honors page, the final round of honors acceptances go out mid to late February. There is no definite correlation between that scholarship and honors, depending on the strength of this year’s applicant pool. She is definitely in the ball park. Her essays may be the deciding factor.

New to the website, so please let me know if I’m posting in the wrong place/on the wrong thread. My son was accepted to USC early (we are from Georgia) and received letter stating he would receive a scholarship worth at least $72,800 including in-state tuition. We thought that was fantastic until we looked at all scholarships and it is in the middle as far as money.
He also applied to Honors College and has not heard yet. His stats are: ACT 33, GPA 3.86 weighted, 3.84 unweighted, 8 AP classes plus score of 4 on all 4 AP exams he has taken so far.
Do you think he has a good chance of getting into the Honors College? And does anyone have information on Capstone? Sounds awesome, but you have to be invited?
As far as the scholarship, it says “at least” because they want to let you know you’re getting at least that amount but could be more. Compare where your stats fall into the different scholarship levels to give you a better idea. I thought the same thing for my daughter last year (ACT 34) and she ended up with the Cooper, which is around where your son could be based on the averages listed. They send out the final notices in March.
For what it’s worth, I think your son has a great chance of Honors based on stats alone but they put a lot of emphasis on all those essays so will depend on that as well. You should find out sometime in February. And if he doesn’t get in Honors, I believe they send out the Capstone invites in March and he’s a strong candidate for that too.
FYI, here are stats for honors and capstone. Honors interquartile are 1390-1470 (CR+M) SAT and 31-33 ACT, GPA of 4.65. Average stats for Capstone were SAT 1322 and ACT 30. Some people have already posted acceptances here with stats below these. Since 25% of class of around 400 freshmen will be below these numbers, there will be lots of acceptances in that range. There is likely some crossover on numbers in lower 25% of honors and top Capstone students. Again, the essays are heavily considered for honors admissions as whole and definitely for top awards.
For top scholarships, last year averages - Carolina Scholars, SAT 1501/ACT 33 with GPA of 4.95. McNair Scholars SAT 1507/ACT 34 with GPA 4.6.
My hs senior d was also accepted very early and also rec’d the same scholarship letter above with similar test scores and 4.0 unweighted GPA and very high rank. She applied to honors as well and has not heard yet either. Her sister is a sophomore in Capstone (chose not to apply to honors) and I do know that there are many students in Capstone who have very high stats and actually applied to honors and did not get in. Most of my USC’s d’s Capstone friends had very high test scores and some were in higher scholarship ranges than you would expect for Capstone. I am sure there are many more highly qualified students than there are seats in honors. I did tell my d to make sure she focused on her essays…it seems like it really does come down to that in many cases. I think there is still a chance for those who have not heard as the letter does say that you can hear through the end of February about honors, and Capstone notification is usually early March. We were very happy to get the scholarship letter early though!! FWIW, I know she doesn’t get all the honors perks, but d has really enjoyed Capstone and has met a lot of great friends from the program!
I was curious as to whether a 3.78wgpa and 1260 would even give me a chance at capstone? I know there’s some gpa conversion from where I’m at now though
^^ if you look up the profile given for Capstone ( I happened to see it here on some pw they sent)…the midrange from last year’s class was 1280-1350 (29-31 ACT) and 4.17-4.56 on a 5.0 scale, so your scores are slightly under that, but I think it really depends on the strength of the class coming in.I do know that they really like to see a lot of EC’s and volunteer hours as well. Capstone students are required to maintain a certain number of points for volunteer hours, attending different functions, etc. so they definitely look at your entire application.Good luck!
^^ @MattC412…your scores do look like they are in scholarship range, and in order to be invited to Capstone you must have rec’d a scholarship so that will help too.
Massmom and I have the same question…my S will be very borderline on getting to scholarship weekend…1480/33 4.85 weigthed V. 3.8 regular…AP’s in 9/10 grade and college classes every since…highly ranked early college in NC.
But soft on the EC…and certainly not the world changing super achievers that you see on this site that have gotten Mcnair…really remarkable stuff.
I will say USC has done a great job “recruiting” him…he applied to Duke,Clemson and NCST…and USC has jumped to the front for him.
@chuck222 If your S received a December invite to the Honors College then I would say that he is in the pool of applicants that may be invited to the McNair weekend. Please be aware that only 40 OOS kids are invited to attend the McNair weekend. Any applicant who attends the McNair weekend will receive at least the Horseshoe. Also, if your son qualifies for the Lieber scholarship, it can be stacked with other scholarships.
If he is not invited to the McNair weekend, I would assume that he would get the Cooper based on his stats.
