Scholarships and Transfers

Hey everybody. I'm a current second semester senior in high school who was accepted to a solid, middle-tier LAC. I planned on doing Model UN out there, but it turns out their club went dormant a few years ago. I was not made aware of this until after I sent in my deposit. I'm very bummed out because I did it in high school and now I won't be able to do it college. However, I have a large scholarship at this college and my parents are paying for the amount not covered by my scholarship. If I transfer after a year, is there anyway my new school could match the scholarship? Thats the only way I can sell it to my parents, unless I pay for the rest. I'd like to transfer to GWU, Tulane, American, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina or Northeastern.

Occasionally during fr admissions, schools will match merit scholarships, but usually matching is limited to need based FA with peer schools. Also, there are many fewer merit awards for transfers than for fr admits, and they are usually for smaller amounts. Therefore, IMO the likelihood that a higher ranked school would match a merit award from fr year at a lower ranked school would be about nil.

Just a question. Why can’t you resurrect the Model UN at your current school? That sounds like a great project and will look great on your resume. I’m sure you can find others on your campus who would be interested in such a club.

Thanks for you response. I’m not currently on-campus, but I’m already working with a few incoming Freshmen and getting the team going. I did roughly the same thing at my high school a few years earlier. I’m also concerned that my college’s name is big enough, thats one of the reasons I wanted to transfer.

I have searched and searched for schools that offer merit scholarships to transfers, and there are very few that would compare to a merit scholarship offered to a freshman applicant. Many of the merit scholarships for transfers are only for students coming from CCs in that state. There is a good thread with information on transfer scholarships in this forum that you could take a look at though. Do a search for transfer scholarships and you should find it.

Additionally, like that1guyy said, it’s actually lucky that Model UN is inactive at your school. That might make it the best choice, since being able to start up a club at your college that you were active in in HS is a great opportunity.

As far as your school not having a big enough name… Well, one of the benefits of going to a school like that is that if you are exceptional enough, you will stand out a lot from your fellow students at the school.

^The Resources sticky thread at the top of this forum has a link to the Transfer Scholarship thread.

Thanks for your replies. I think I will go ahead and try to get the club moving at my school. I already found a few people who will work with me, so its looking a lot better now.
