I'm an out of state student, and I heard there is this Regent's scholarship for UC undergraduates. COmpare with other state schools, I see that UC systems offer fewer scholarships. I'm I right or wrong? I'm very interested in Cal and can only attend here if I have to pay a negligible amount <$5000 (total cost of attendance). What are the scholarships opportunities here at Berkeley, and how competitive are they???

Merit-based scholarships are very few and far between at Berkeley…The Regents scholarship only offers a few thousand per year to in-state students, and I’m not even sure that they offer it to out-of-state students. One thing that the Regents scholarship does provide, however, is that Berkeley agrees to meet your financial need (based on EFC), which could be useful. But unless your EFC is extremely low, there’s no way your costs will be as low as you want.

by total cost of attendance, do you also mean housing/ meal plan (included if living in a dorm) as well as books/ supplies ? or just the tuition? which is significantly more for out of state students…

I mean everything.

Everyone who applies to Berkeley is considered for the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship. If you’re considered, you’ll have to do an interview - beyond that, you don’t have to do much else to apply for/receive the scholarship.

I think you might automatically be considered for the Alumni Scholarship, but if you receive Regents’ (and mention it in your interview) your chances might decrease. Besides, Regents’ will automatically “absorb” any other scholarships you receive.

Unfortunately, I’ve never met an out-of-state RCSA scholar… But it wouldn’t hurt to apply to Berkeley and see if they consider you for Regents’.

Out of state RC scholar here.

Also, I was never interviewed.

If your family’s poor enough (<60,000 a year), you can pull off $5000 a year for total cost.
