so, i was looking at scholarships on the UF website (engineering in particular) and it appears to me that they expect you to contact the UF foundation for each scholarship. in other words, you are not able to apply online, but instead they just give you the number to the foundation. what is up with this? every other school i'm looking at has an online form for scholarships.

i kinda have the same question…how can we apply for scholarships at uf?

I think that through the FAFSA they evaluate for each scholarship that can apply to you.

They don’t rely on the FAFSA for scholarships… That’s a different kind of financial aid.

so if we don’t fill out fafsa how do we apply for scholarships?

Obviously is through the FAFSA!! if not, then they are going to give the money to others that are not so needy as the ones with an EFC of zero.

What are you talking about lr2010? Do you even know what a scholarship is? I was awarded a few before I filled my FAFSA out… I tried politely telling you that you’re wrong without blatantly saying it, but you’re wrong. You’re thinking of financial aid through need, not merit.

And WHO is talking about merit scholarships??? obviously we are talking about Financial Need! not merit!

Who is “we”? The OP is talking about scholarships… I think you’re in the wrong thread.

whatever…

yeah i’m talking about merit based scholarships…so now that we’ve cleared that up…anybody have suggestions?

I just got an invitation to the honors program and $5k from it. I wish I could give it to one of my friends who didn’t get in (she deserved to though…).

that sucks for your friend…i was invited to the honors program…but i didn’t get five thousand. how did you get that? hah

Yeah, UF doesn’t give merit based scholarships and Dnerd shouldn’t qualify by his scores (1970 SAT) he posted in his past threads.

I’m skeptical.

Are you talking about the scholarships awarded directly from each college/department?

I was looking into that as well, although in my case it was for CLAS. I’m pretty sure all of those scholarships are for currently attending UF undergrads.

For CLAS (again, I don’t know if this is the same for engineering) this is what it says:

Undergraduate Scholarships

The following scholarships are for students currently enrolled at the University of Florida.

Only one completed application needs to be submitted and you will automatically be considered for all scholarships you qualify for that are listed below in this Undergraduate Scholarships section. Undergraduate applications must be submitted electronically using the form below before 5pm on February 1 each year. The Scholarships are awarded in the Spring and the funds are available at the beginning of the following fall term, after registration. The contact information for these Undergraduate Scholarships is: CLAS Dean’s Office, 2014 Turlington Hall, (352) 392-0780. This year’s scholarship application will be made available on this website on - September 25th, 2009.

Dnerd, forgive me if I’m wrong, but aren’t you a NAF? I know you automatically qualify for Honors because of it, but I wasn’t sure if you would have made it in otherwise. I’m just wondering because that’s the situation I’m in (NMF, but my GPA is slightly too low), except I haven’t gotten an invite to the honors program yet.

It is my understanding that UF doesn’t really need to dole out merit-based scholarships. It’s THE Flagship university of Florida. The Best and the Brightest are accepted [usually in-state - the university is ~95% Floridians] and most [about 96% if I remember correctly] are covered by some kind of Bright Futures merit.
Lesser-known schools such as USF crave the kind of students UF accepts nonchalantly for their general education program. Case in point…I score $28k and an Honors program…plea…from USF. UF =/= USF. They don’t seek out anybody - the in-staters come to them. Merit-based scholarships would be relatively rare, I’d presume.
Even their monies for NMF/NMSF are a little shoddy compared to USF [$48,000 for NMSF ] or UCF [free tuition for NMSF].

“Dnerd, forgive me if I’m wrong, but aren’t you a NAF?”

yep, but I love watching pretentious people such as Ryan freak out. I wouldn’t have made it in without lateral admission or petitioning (that’s how my older brother got in).

That’s all true. But they do give out Presidential Scholarships, although I have no idea how many of those they give out.

Recipients are selected from admitted freshman based on scholastic accomplishment and academic potential. Consideration is given to students with potential to contribute to the campus community and realize a particular benefit from a UF undergraduate degree. No separate scholarship application is required. The Presidential Scholarship Program is a tiered program with different award levels.

The only other mention of them on CC suggests that it is “used to recruit high achieving minorities” for what that’s worth.

Edit: Sorry, just saw your edit. My bad, lol.

Dnerd, we’re gonna love you at FSU!!! So much less attitude here…

@ biply: I wasn’t referring to you. That’s why I edited my post. You’re fine; I like you actually.
