Scholarships at Wash U.

I just found out about Washington U. What merit based scholarships do they offer? And how many full rides do they give out? What kind of SAT do you need to get a full ride?

I think you will find all the information you need at their website for merit-based scholarships:

http://admissions.wustl.edu/admissions/ua.nsf/3rd%20Level%20Pages_Scholarships_scholarships.htm?OpenPage&charset=iso-8859-1

They look at a lot of things besides your SAT score - trust me on this, I have a daughter who won a full-tuition scholarship there. She had ACT=35, SAT I = 800M + 770V, SAT II= 800 + 800 + 790. I don't know about the average stats of other winners, but I suspect they were similar.

The College of Arts & Sciences offers about 12 full + 24 half-scholarships per year, which are subject-specific. For example, I believe they award upto three 100% and six 50% Moog scholarships each year, which is for biology-related majors.

Hope this helps.

wait what happened to princeton?

What do you mean what happened to Pton? I'm still applying. I want to have like 3 reaches, 3 matches (matches that will give merit based aid) and 1 safety.

Only second rate schools have merit based scholarships.

oh.
so washu is a match...
kay, b/c a lot my of friends who aplleid and got into HYP apllied to Washu as a safety and got rejected for this very reason.

college2go.....sorta of...actually merit scholarships are the marketing vehicle schools use to ride the wave of qualified candidates who choose the money over prestige of institution. As this strategy matures you have a rise in USNWR rankings and thus a point where the merit/bait is not longer required. Infusion of cash to bind top admits jacks the marketability of a particular school.

hazmat: Is Washington still at this stage where they're using bait? Or are they elite enough where they will steadily stop giving merit aid?

I know kids who got in last year with $$$ and i guess you would need to consider the quality of your paper.....I mean if they can attract you away and it raises their stats i feel that they are still buying. Their endowment is fairly big and as long as the alums are funding the buying spree it will continue.

quote:

Academic Scholarships

Washington University is committed to helping talented students who show exceptional academic performance and outstanding promise. The University awarded nearly $52 million in scholarships and grants in the 2004-05 academic year to our undergraduate students. Our Academic Scholarship and Fellowship Programs offer financial assistance based solely on academic achievement. These scholarships and fellowships are awarded through special competitions.

I know that WashU is known for having a large amount of merit based scholarships. I will be attending in the fall and there is no way I could afford college without scholarships. I recieved a full scholarship plus 2500 stiped, which is allowing me to attend. The applicant pool is very competitive for these various programs. I know at the scholarship weekend I attended, there were researchers and people who had been published and other various meritable things. Hope this helps.

Also, there is a seperate scholarship that is not mentioned online. Its called the danforth scholarship and your school is allowed to nominate one person to apply for it. It is very competitive, but not as many people know about it because it isn't highlighted on the website as far as i know.

I'm an Enterprise Rent a Car Scholar.

I had a 800M 710V, 740Writing, 780IIC, 800IC, 780Physics.

I took 9APs and got mostly 5's. Varsity Volleyball Lettered Athlete.

indeed. saying that WashU attracts good students because of financial aid isn't bad. :) in fact, its good because it will motivate the smart, hardworking students there. To say that WashU is a safety school but must have scholarship is a very cocky statement. You may get in and get a scholarship but remember, any top 10 ranked school is NOT a safety. esp with a SCHOLARSHIP from WashU. I know several people who applied to all Ivies (extremely qualified) and didn't get into a single one. I remember one girl had to beg a local college to accept her.

Of course offering merit money jumps the number of applicants at WUSTL. It is possible for students who cannot get FA from Ivy to get money from WUSTL. By bumping up the applicants they bump down their acceptance rate...thus helping the rise in rank.

indeed. and like I said somewhere, that doesn't just make them rise in rank. That betters the quality of each incoming class

By bettering the quality of acceptee you then raise the peer review and the research and the desirability of the institution. It all works together.

Precisely. So thats why I don't see why people who want to go to ivy leagues or do go tehre currently scorn WashU's practice. Maybe they feel threatened by WashU. :)

I don't scorn it nor do most students I know. I have friends at WUSTL....they like it there. I in fact visited the campus, went to class, sat in on info sessions etc. It is a beautiful campus. I certainly don't think that Ivy students feel threatened by WUSTL. I think most folks who are aware of the merit funding/recruiting feel compelled to inform those who aren't aware....either because applicants don't know about the money available or that the school is better than it once was. It is not an issue of threat but more of anecdotal gossip for there will always be competition for applicants, research grants, reputation of entry into grad schools. I think that as endowments rise schools become competitive regarding funding of students. ie no loans for low income families, offset cost of tuition for all as opposed to merit money. Just remember that Ivy League is old...well funded and will not be adding new members. Remember that Stanford, MIT and Univ of Chicago are all known to be fine institutions who who have differing ways of funding from their endowment. People make a market where and how they are able and if wise they feed the market ...this is what WUSTL is doing....free enterprise.

too bad most of my friends don't feel that way :(

Are you speaking of friends who are Ivy? I mean many Ivy schools get dissed because of the cost......disparity in accept %s....we get dissed all of the time too.

Merit scholarships attract only Ivy rejected students.
People with income less than 40K get free ride at Ivies.
