Really great feeling when I got an unexpected mail that I was named a Deans Scholar. :)
I had applied by the scholarship deadline but hadn't actually applied to any scholarships (no time for Norman Topping :().
Anyways, are these kind of scholarships decided both by those who decide to apply and those who didn't but applied by the scholarship deadline? E.g. their application was automatically assessed.
Hope this makes sense!

Still too expensive for me though :( Probably going to UCLA where I got NO aid but is still cheaper...

Congratulations!

There is no separate application for most USC scolarships - simply applying by Dcember 1st is applying for the scholarships (including Dean’s). The NTSAF has a separate application because it is administered and funded by the students of USC, not USC itself.
jay,
These days with the huge cuts at UCLA sit down and figure out what it would cost you to attend five years vs. four at SC. Perhaps the sum might be closer to what your family can afford. It is not always simple to obtain classes at UCLA.

Also, did you apply for financial aid? Wait until your financial aid package comes to see if the aid will make a difference in addition to the Dean’s Scholarship.

Incidentally, congratulations on the Dean’s. Only slightly more than 100 are given each year.

Thanks alamemom! That totally makes sense Same with UCLA huh… I was invited to apply for a freshman scholarship there that was sponsored by alumni and that too was independent, while I think UC’s choose their regents scholarships, no?

:( @Georgia Girl yeah UCLA’s been my dream school for awhile, but I know how competitive it is these days… Although USC may be a tad competitive too. I applied for financial aid and sent in my correction last week? I don’t think I’m getting any though because my CalGrant still hasn’t come in, and UCLA gave me zip (though I qualified for loans). Tried checking USC but couldn’t get in. Will update if I find out!
And thank you for your congratulations!

Jaygiggle,
Just an update…If you check the U.S. News Rankings SC has a lower admit rate than UCLA. SC’s SAT scores are higher as well as the ACT scores. In the latest U.S. New SC is ranked 20th in the nation in selectivity, UCLA at 24th.

Teacher student ratio UCLA 1/16 USC 1/9

Faculty resources rank (hghest is best) SC 27th UCLA 43rd

ACT Composite UCLA 25-31 USC 28-33

Alumni giving rank UCLA 107th USC 7th

USC law graduates passed the bar last year at a higher rate than UCLA’s graduates. They topped the state except for Stanford.

Princeton Review ranks USC’s selectivity at 98%.

If you see the thread here about NMScholars who have not been admitted perhaps you will realize the idea you have of SC’s academic rigor is outdated.

This certainly is something to consider, thank you for the new information. I’ve visited both campuses of USC and UCLA in the same day, and both have their separate ups and downs. I’m still waiting to see if I receive any more financial aid from USC. I’ll post back if I get any more information for myself.
