Scholarships & FAFSA

I just opened my ACCEPTANCE letter :) and I found out they are giving me 28k!!!!!

Does this money include the money I should be getting from FAFSA or is this in addition to FAFSA? Getting 28k and still having to pay 20k is very different than getting 28k from Lehigh and getting another 15k from FAFSA leaving a mere 5k left over.

I received 35k. Congratulations on your acceptance and scholarship.

Unless it is a merit award, the award is given with the FAFSA info in consideration. If there is a Stafford loan component, FAFSA information has been considered,

poozis, what was your "EFC" number if you don't mind me asking. I only got $11,000 in a Lehigh Grant and I'm wondering why everyone else's seems so high.

Also, what do you mean about the additional FAFSA money that you should be getting? I think I'm missing something!

I recieved a small Lehigh grant too and I was just wondering if there was a separate letter that tells you merit award info or if it should have come with the rd mailing.

I don't mind: My estimated EFC was about 20,000 (which is approximately what is left over after the aid awarded to me with the acceptance). The letter broke it down for me, but I am still confused:

Lehigh Scholar - 4,500 (total of two semesters)
Lehigh University Grant - 23,380 (total of two semesters)

I am guessing that this means that they considered FAFSA's recommendations and gave me enough scholarships to leave just what my family should be contributing.(Total cost of Lehigh ~ 50,000 - 28,000 = 22,000)

The only mention of a Stafford Loan was in the explanation of the Lehigh Scholar part. It said this made me eligible (along with most other Lehigh students) to take out a Stafford Loan. It requires me to indicate whether I wish to take out the loan.

Also, a random question: If you were in the position to have to take out 20,000/year of loans (to be an engineer) at Lehigh, would you? Why or why not? What if between having a job/external sources of money you could cut that cost down to 15,000/year? Would you take it or go to a cheaper, state university? Why?

If all of your contribution must come from loans that the student (not parents) pays back, stay instate. Engineering programs, if ABET accredited, have very specific curricula.

poozislove - you do not 'get' money from FAFSA. FAFSA merely uses your financial information to produce your EFC. The school uses the EFC to find your 'need' on which need based aid is based. In your case, if the COA is $50,000 and your EFC is 20,000, your 'need' is $30,000 and the school has met nearly your full need with institutional money and no loans which is awesome. Your EFC is too high for you to qualify for federal grants and as your need has been met with institutional money you would not qualify for federal aid money.

As far as Stafford loans are concerned - all students are eligible for unsubsidized Stafford loans which are not need based. However the maximum Stafford loans for a freshman are $3500.

Our EFC is around $33K, why we only got $4K something + Stafford loan

For those of you receiving fin aid and merit packages: Before you accept admission be very diligent to check whether your awards are for one year or for four.....We have a close friend at Lehigh who received a merit scholarship and did not realize it was not renewable...In addition, her financial aid was pulled after freshman year without an increase in her EFC.....Very difficult.....

The merit awards at Lehigh are per year BUT renewable over 4 years of full time undergrad study. You are required to maintain a certain GPA for them to be renewed. So if hers weren't renewed, there must be a good reason...

And if you receive outside scholarships - that amount will be reduced from the grants you receive from Lehigh.

POOZISLOVE - If you dont mind me asking what were your stats
my d got in to the engineering school her SATs were 2120 (750/M 680/CR)
but they didn't give her dime

This was her number 1 - difficult time as she got full tuition from TCNJ & Seton Hall and $16 K from Loyola, Fairfield, Scranton

No Fin aid as Our EFC was very high because family assets, have tagged some money toward education but only 25K per year. She would have to take on the additional 25K in loans.

I know she is trying to weight this out but how is a 17 year old going to figure this out when her parent doesn't know what to do. Especially in todays economy

scholarships from lehigh are very hard to come by in my opinion; only 20 get the asa packer award and 70 the deans scholarship.
i wish i could have gotten more scholarship money, because my family will not get a dime for need-based aid.

and POOZISLOVE was that all merit aid? because then i would definitely like to know your stats also.

Just curious, has anyone been selected for the Rodale Journalism Program?

None of the money listed was in loan form, if that's what you are asking. There was the 23,000ish grant from the school and a 4500 scholarship.

My stats:
Rank: 4/640
SAT: 720 CR 800 MA 680 WR
SATII: 790 MathII 650 WorldHist
ECs: I had 6 ECs of varied interest. I held leadership positions in 5 of them. I was involved for at least 3 years in all of them. They are pretty typical. (One sport, two academic, three interest)
Essays: I thought my essays rocked.
Recs: I read all three of mine (two teachers+GC) and they weren't the best things I have ever read, but they were solid.
I showed interest by visiting the campus, taking a tour, and I e-mailed them once or twice about random things.

For the longest time Lehigh was my second choice school. Once I got accepted, it bumped up to my first, but now I am getting other acceptances and I have no idea which schools I like anymore.

poozislove - a 'grant' is need based aid. This is from the and is quite generous. To be eligible for federal grant money your FAFSA EFC would have to be quite low - under @4040. Lehigh has just about met your need based on your EFC. I doubt you can expect any more.
