scholarships/financial aid

I just wanna know how much financial aid and scholarships UT gives.

Oh well they give everyone 20,000 dollars...What?! Obviously it depends on many circumstances of which you provided nothing in which someone could assess you by. Financial Aid packages depend more on you family's financial circumstances and less on your performance in high school, unless you performed exceptionally (eg. 2250+ SAT, Top 1%, Intel Internships, UIL State Champion etc.) Generally speaking if your family makes over 150K a year I wouldn't expect much in the form of scholarships. On the other hand if you family makes below 50K I would say you have a reasonable chance to receive some grants/need based scholarships. But remember nothing is guaranteed and you certainly aren't "entitled" to any specific amount of money.

Actually, scholarships have nothing at all to do with your family's financial circumstances. I don't know about financial aid, but I got $24,000 in scholarships from the engineering school and UT knows nothing about how much my parents make because I didn't send them the FAFSA or anything like that

^ they ask for it when you apply...in the texas app scholarship section....so u lied about it?

how did u get 24K rch855?

azndude1 is right about having to input your parents' (or other) income into the TexasApply scholarship section (whether or not you submit a FAFSA). And when you hit "submit" at the end of the Texas app, you check a box saying basically "everything I have said about my finances is true and I understand you can withdraw my scholarship if I lied".

Maybe you asked your parents to fill out that part of the app because they had the financial info at their fingertips or something...

Yeah I know for sure that I didn't send them the FAFSA, but it is possible that there was a financial section in the scholarship app that I just had my parents fill out, I cant really remember. regardless, i cant imagine that all the scholarships are need-based, otherwise I wouldnt have gotten so much, since I applied to several private schools with the FAFSA and they offered me no financial aid, yet UT gave me scholarships.

how did u get 24K tho?
high stats?

I believe he means $6k per year. Engineering was given a lot of money by a gentleman named Cockerell, so they named the school after him and give out cash like candy. The same applies for the Jackson School of Geosciences. Any other college, don't expect anything.

High stats, good writing, and being incredibly well-rounded are about the only way to get scholarships at UT. About 3,000 students are accepted to the College of Liberal Arts each fall. Of those student, exactly 6 receive a scholarship from the college. If you do manage to get that scholarship, you get $13k a year for 4 years. It's pretty cool...

But yeah, good luck. Financial aid and scholarships as a general rule suck. Most kids do not believe that they get enough need-based aid in comparison to their income (however, this may be because UT likes to give out loans). Almost everyone I know who applied for aid was offered loans or grants enough to cover everything. However, it's definitely slanted toward loans.

well i got $3k a year from National merit and then yeah like loneranger said $6k a year from the engineering school. i dont know about other colleges within UT, but for engineering its basically just based on your SAT score from what an advisor told me. i don't know about them giving out cash like candy, but if youre a well qualified engineering applicant youre more likely to get a scholarship than a well qualified, say, liberal arts applicant.

rch855,

National Merit is only worth $3000 a year at UT? Were you a semi-finalist or finalist?

I'm hoping my daughter is a finalist and she is interested in geology. Maybe she'll get some kind of scholarship from the Jackson School of Geoscience.

i was a finalist, and it ends up being $4k the first year and $3k each year there after, for a total of $13k. its different for out of state though, and for hispanic or achievement scholars. if your daughter is a semifinalist then as long as she does the application and puts forth a little effort she's almost sure to be a finalist, only about 10% of semifinalists dont advance. But Im guessing if she's a semifinalist then she'll get a decent amount of scholarship money from the college of geoscience

what was your SAT score rch? my math is up to par but idk about my reading..i'll probably take math 2s soon

My psat was 220....i think for texas the cutoff for being a semifinalist is 216 or 217 though
