I'm a sophmore in high school, and I want to start applying for scholarships...I'm an african-american.born in africa(nigeria) and I want to major in performing arts, and i want to knw if anybody know any scholarships for a minority like me...thanxs

Are you an American citizen? If so, there are many scholarships for African Americans.

If you are still Nigerian, it will be harder to find scholarships.

The best way to find scholarship info are:

fastweb.com, a free service that's excellent

Your guidance counselor's office. Check the bulletin boards, folders, etc. Make the GC secretary your best friend. :)

The specific colleges themselves. Before setting your heart on a college, check out their financial aid and scholarship policies. Some colleges have next to no financial aid or merit scholarships. If you need lots of money, no need to apply. Others give aid only to American citizens or state residents.

When it comes to colleges offering merit money, usually one has to have stats in the top 25% or even higher of their applicants in order to have a good chance of aid. Sometimes the colleges provide info about average scores, etc. of successful merit aid applicants. E-mailing the financial aid office also can get you info about your chances or what you can do now to qualify later.

northstarmom's advice are primo. there are plenty of scholarships specifically for African Americans. dont forget scholarships that disregard race, there are millions of those as well. i think the rest of us are at a disadvantage.

yea, but most of the scholarships for blacks say u have to attend an historically black school. what if u want to attend a regular school?

"yea, but most of the scholarships for blacks say u have to attend an historically black school. what if u want to attend a regular school?"

This is not true at all. There are many scholarships for African Americans that the students can take to whatever colleges they wish. In addition, many private and public mainstream colleges have scholarships earmarked for African Americans and for other underrepresented minorities. Check out the financial aid and scholarship pages of colleges that interest you or do a Google search.

If your bold and think you got what it takes try Ron Brown Scholarship.
