Scholarships for an ok student?

I'm looking for any sort of scholarships that I can get. I am a URM (Hispanic), looking to go into Materials Science, am not economically disadvantaged at all (120k/year), and have decent grades (3.42 GPA, top 25% or so). I got a 2180 on my SAT with an 800 in math, and I'm a National Hispanic Scholar + National Commended Student.

Is there anything out there for me?

Yes, there will be some scholarships for you, but first, what are you interested in studying, and what kind of a college do you think you would enjoy?

I have heard (don’t know it from first-hand knowledge) that a lot of universities that give $ for National Merit scholars will do the same for National Hispanic Scholars but don’t advertise it. I would do some searches on college confidential and see what schools have good Natl Merit $ then call them.

there are tons of scholarships out there, many of which i am sure you qualify for – you need to do some hunting, find some match scholarships, apply, and hope for the best…good luck!

“Yes, there will be some scholarships for you, but first, what are you interested in studying, and what kind of a college do you think you would enjoy?”

^Materials Science and Engineering. I have found some scholarships that are affiliated with the schools I am looking into, but no good outside scholarships.

I apologize, I didn’t read your post correctly. I do not know enough about outside scholarships, but do know that this seems to be a nicely funded area within colleges…what schools are you considering?

Some of the flagship state schools in the list above, including OSU, UT Austin and both Arizona schools, offer generous scholarships for NHS. Notice that the OSU NHS Distinguished scholarship only covers the in-state portion of tuition, but they also offer the National Buckeye scholarship for out-of-state students that will stack with their NHS scholarship, plus other scholarships if you qualify.

I don’t know of any private schools that explicitly offer $$ for NHS, but I can tell you from personal experience that some of them, such as RPI and CWRU, can be very generous with merit money for a student of your qualifications.

I don’t know much about outside scholarships, but if money is an issue I doubt you will find this kind of money outside of the schools themselves.

Here are a few. For each one, you have to list that school first on your National Merit form to get the scholarship.

University of Arizona - $20,000/year

Arizona State University - $23,000/year

University of Nebraska-Lincoln - full tuition plus $2000/year

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) - minimum of $17,000/year (materials science is listed under mechanical engineering)

University of Rochester - gives some amount, but web site doesn’t say how much

It looks (based on other posts on this site) like the OP already has a list of schools, including Purdue and other schools in the top 15 USNWR list. He’s also said that he believes where you get your undergrad degree is not so important.

What I would suggest based on that criteria is that he add OSU and one other school (e.g. UNL, ASU or UA) to his list as financial safeties. Next spring he can decide what school to enroll in based on their financial offers and his other criteria. If Purdue or some other of his favorite schools makes him a good offer, he can go there. If their offers are not attractive, he can go to OSU instead, or if money is the primary consideration he can go to ASU, where $23K is enough to cover tuition, fees, books and room.

Thanks for all your replies, I’m definitely going to look at all those schools.

I had no idea Arizona gave so much merit money!

Wow - that’s quite a list…good luck fiN01, and congratulations on your achievements.

National Hispanic
My D is also a senior this year. This is the list of free ride offers she has gotten. She is National Hispanic and National Commended. Don’t be afraid to look outside Tx(where we live too). New College of Fla sounds like a great school, and the most academically challenging of the ones here(unless you go Plan II at UT). You should have a lot of nice options. Might try Cornell. Know a kid there who graduated from HS a few years ago and got in as National Hispanic scholar(was about #15 in her class). Don’t forget Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford and probably others require NO family contribution if family income is below a certain level($5,000 if I recall). Some of the Eastern schools are very eager for top Hispanic students.
Happy hunting.
UT Austin 12,000 ($3000 for four years). UT tuition is $7630 for one year for 06-07, so this scholarship pays less than half of tuition.
UT Dallas Free tuition($45,000 value)
Westminster College, Salt Lake City Free tuition=value of over 82,000
University of Nebraska Full tuition scholarship: $14,250 per year, so approx $$57,000 over four years
Texas State $10,000 per year scholarship
U of Iowa $3000 per year for National Hispanic, and $11,300 over four years for National Scholars Award. Will also receive Advantage Iowa Award based on merit in amount from $2000 to full tuition. Get priority registration and housing, and admission automatically to University Honors Program.
Iowa State $6000 for four years. May compete for partial or full tuition scholarships.
New College of Florida $70,000($17,500 a year)
U of South Carolina $70,000($6000 for four years, plus tuition reduction that makes total value more than $70,000)
University of South Florida $64,000=pays for out of state tuition, and on campus room and board
Ohio State U 13,167(full in-state tuition plus $4500)
Wesleyan 5 National Excellence Scholarships= Full Cost National Merit or Achievement Finalist, National Hispanic Scholar

Finalists will receive $10,000 in grants/scholarships.

Scholars in the National Hispanic Recognition Program who have not been awarded a Knox Academic Scholarship are automatically eligible for a Knox scholarship of up to $15,000 per year. Students designated as Honorable Mentions in the National Hispanic Recognition program can receive at least $10,000 per year.

U Nebraska Lincoln [UNL Admissions | National Hispanic Scholars](http://admissions.unl.edu/diversity/nationalhispanic.asp) SCHOLARSHIPSFinalists in the National Hispanic Recognition Program upon admission to NEBRASKA automatically receive Full tuition plus $2,000, renewable for up to four years. Other scholarships may be available however; you must apply by January 15, 2008 to be eligible.

When will I receive confirmation from the National Hispanic program? My guidence counselor told me in May that CB had sent her something that indicated I was in the National Hispanic Recognition Program, but when will I know if I’m a finalist? Are there other levels? (like commended but for Hispanic students) Do I have to sign something or do any paperwork or does the school do all of that? A lot of the scholarships say that I need to list the school as my first choice, but when do I get that form?

The letters usually arrive by the end of September.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program gives out one of two honors:

National Hispanic Scholar

National Hispanic Honorable Mention Finalist

Scholar is the higher honor. See for example the listing for Knox College, above. They offer different amounts to Scholars and Honorable Mentions.

When schools say things like “Finalists in the National Hispanic Recognition Program” they mean “Scholars”. When schools talk about listing the school as your first choice, that applies only to the National Merit and National Achievement programs. National Hispanic award recipients do not have to do anything.

I know of at least one school (Boston University) where “To be eligible for consideration, NHRP Scholar Finalists must send in their Finalist letter,” but in most cases, it is enough to indicate “National Hispanic Scholar” somewhere in the application.

NHRP Dates and Deadlines (from collegeboard.com)

October: High School juniors take the PSAT/NMSQT and self-identify as Hispanic on the answer sheet.

Early April: NHRP sends information to high school principals about the students who are being considered for the program.

End of April/May: High schools return NHRP verification forms containing the student’s information to the NHRP program office.

Mid-September: NHRP distributes a CD-ROM containing the students’ names, contact information, and majors of interest to colleges and universities.

Mid-September: NHRP provides high schools with the names of the recognized students. Award certificates are distributed to high schools for student recognition.

You can subscribe to Fastweb (google it) and see what they have for you. You can also go to your GC for local scholarships. As far as outside scholarships go, however, they are few and far between, particularly any that are substantial in amount. The majority of scholarships and grants come from the colleges themselves.

I have recommended to a number of kids to look at Momfromtexas’s thread on looking for full rides. If money is of the utmost importance, and the student wants to go away to schools, her method is the way to go. That means looking at schools that are not well known, and are willing to pay for students of a certain sort, usually above their threshholds. THat can include kids with average stats.
