Scholarships for CC students? Please help.

So, I had a terrible GPA in high-school. It was around a 2.3 unweighted if I’m remembering correctly. My ACT score was decent – 25 – it’s probably the reason I got accepted into the schools I applied to.

The week before I was meant to leave my parents decided to not cosign my loan, and well…I didn’t get to go to uni. Since then I’ve pretty much been sitting around the house wasting away on the net, waiting for spring to come around so I could get a transfer degree at a local CC.

The thing is, none of the schools around here offer a decent chunk of change for transfer students. I’m trying to get the final two years, or three if I decide to transfer out early, paid for completely without having to rely on private loans. And that seems to be impossible the way things are going.

To conclude, does anyone know of scholarships for CC students? Can I apply for freshman year college student scholarships even if I’m not attending a four year?

Please, please help. Even if you comment to tell me it’s hopeless at this point, that would help. At this rate, it appears I won’t be getting much asides from an associates.

Some of the hbcu’s give transfer scholarships for a 3.0 gpa. I think Alabama State might do this.

I should mention that the schools do offer scholarships, they’re just so lacking. Like, 4,000 dollars per year lacking.

Can you get a job?

Have you met with a transfer advisor at your community college?

Why did you not have a job?

Google “Jack Kent Cooke scholarship” and read about the kind of serios money that is out there for top CC graduates. Visit the Phi Theta Kappa website and find out aobut more smaller scholarships.

The Transfer Advisor at your CC should be able to help you look for money, but you need to know that there is no magic wand here. You have to have the grades that will help you with the merit money.

What state are you in? Are there any 4 year schools within commuting distance of where you live? When students don’t have much money or the stats to qualify for merit aid, they generally have to start close to home.

I’m not clear about your current status. Have you started community college? Do you qualify for any need based aid (the federal Pell grant or state grants)? Will your parents help pay anything or do you have to finance everything on your own? If your only financial resources are the federal student loan (~$5500/year) plus whatever you can earn (usually ~$3k/summer), then you’re going to have to get your 2 year degree first. Colleges that offer aid to transfers don’t offer much, and they consider high school grades unless you have an associate’s degree.

Check on the local cc’s website or talk with their transfer advisor. Some cc’s have special scholarships to help top students complete their degree.
