Scholarships for Current College Students

I am currently a sophomore at a junior college, and I was wondering what are some good scholarships that I could apply for? (I’m going to stay for a second year as a sophomore and was told that financial aid probably won’t give me much next year since I’ll be over my credit needed to graduate.) I’m in Phi Theta Kappa, my college GPA is 3.94, and high school GPA is 4.0 (5.2 on weighted 5.0 scale.) Thank you!

Well…you might be out of luck. You are exceeding your credit count to graduate. Most scholarships will not fund that.

You also want to be careful not to take too many credits there…or you could run into difficulty transferring.

Why are you staying a third year?

I’m staying a second year. I had enough dual credit from high school to start as a sophomore. The tuition isn’t too bad ($2000 to $3000 per year.) I decided to stay a second year because I’m not prepared to transfer yet (I haven’t a clue where I want to transfer among other things.) In order for me to graduate this year, I would have to take two summer classes, and I would rather take a break since I haven’t had more than a month’s break in four-five years. I may graduate in the winter. Still trying to hash out the details with my advisor. My total credits may end up between 70-80 credit hours. I currently have about 50-53, and am taking 12 this semester.

I don’t know about scholarships for community colleges, but see if Jack Kent Cooke gives any. Then keep them in mind for a transfer scholarship. Also you can see if there are local companies, banks, Rotary etc that give any.

Well…free advice. You will get more aid as a fall transfer than a spring one.

You do not have to graduate from a CC to transfer to a four year school. You can transfer at any time.

But it seems you don’t want to leave the CC.

Go and talk to the transfer advisor at the CC. Get input from that person. Do it NOW.

There’s nothing wrong with not knowing what you want to do next. I’d get a job, pay out of pocket for the 2 classes needed to get the Associate’s, and apply to 4-year schools when I knew what I wanted to study.
