My son is completing his freshman year and did very well. Made Dean's List first semester and is expecting to do so again for the 2nd semester. Currently his major is University Studies. Is anyone aware of any scholarships for existing students who are doing well? Any suggestions for how to approach the financial aid office about this issue?

When we talked to FA on Decision Day, they said students are reconsidered for merit aid after freshman year depending on their grade point. I got the impression that it is automatic consideration, but I can’t be sure. And, I don’t remember the exact number (we are not up to that yet). If I were you, I would simply call FA and ask.

Our daughter will be graduating next Saturday from UDEL with her BSN. She was not awarded any merit scholarship money at the time of her admission (UDEL was the only school that didn’t offer her at least some merit money). Over her first 3 years at Delaware her GPA’s ranged yearly from 3.5 to 3.7. Beginning in her sophomore year she began to receive a number of solicitions from many scholastic honor societies at Delaware to join. In spite of all this she was never awarded any merit scholarship money. I can only conclude from this that either you have to have a higher GPA than my daughter was able to achieve to be awarded post admission merit money or that they have some other criteria they use to make such awards. I agree with LINYMOM, give the FA a call and see what they tell you. Please let us know what they say.

My son is also graduating next week. We are in-state and U of D awarded him a modest academic scholarship. He also received other scholarships from outside sources that for the most part covered his tuition. We did not have to pay for his room after his first year since he worked as an R. A. for other three years. U of D discontinued their scholarship even though his grades were good claiming that he did not need it. My son went to the financial aid office and complained. They were able to find an other scholarship specific to one of his majors that replaced the one that had been taken away. The point is the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Odds are you won’t get anything if you don’t ask for it.
