Oh I know. I’ve driven that corn field route myself. lol

That said, there are costs when kids “go away” to school…gas, airfare, hotels for parents, etc.

Hi, I just happened upon this thread and I’d like to join all the other people who have suggested Truman State. My daughter’s ACT score was in the bottom 25% for Truman, but she still received an automatic scholarship for her score and GPA, plus one for being from a contiguous state, and it was enough for her to start there this past fall.

Our EFC was $8K, and we didn’t have as much as you have saved, but we’re making it work. She absolutely LOVES Truman, and we’re very happy with how things are going for her. We can’t find a thing we don’t like about it. The school itself is the perfect size and fit for her. I like that there’s a lot of emphasis on academics, and for a very reasonable price. The kids and staff seem to be extremely friendly. And since Kirksville is so small, there’s lots to do on campus even on the weekends.

Even the distance is manageable-we’re about 4 hours away, but there’s a train station in La Plata, about 15 miles south, so she can come home on Amtrack for the holidays. I know the train also goes to Chicago and there’s lots of kids who travel that direction too, so it’s very convenient.

I think if she were to apply, there are some scholarships that she would be automatically considered for if she applies by December 1. We applied early, and ended up being awarded a small grant and also work study, which was very helpful. (Then again, we visited three times, so that might’ve helped also.)

All in all, we’re very happy with Truman, it’s a great fit and size, and the academics are very good.

It’s been a great experience for her so far and we’re very happy with how she’s doing.

Just an update to all the great people that have helped in this thread. My daughter did not get accepted to UIUC. They obviously care a great deal about test scores and a 23 on the ACT won’t cut it for them. Every single one of her friends got in so now we are dealing with a lot of sadness. Now we just fill out the FAFSA in January and wait for packages to see what we can afford. Hopefully Iowa State or Missouri will come through as some of our other choices still sound like they will be too expensive for us.
Thank you to all of you. I wish I could have gotten her to give Truman State a try.

Sorry to hear that. Do you think she would be open to Truman now that UIUC’s response is in?

Erin’s Dad - isn’t it too late for Truman State if we want/need financial assistance? I’ll talk with her about it if it isn’t too late.

Never mind. I see the due date in January 1st. I’ll speak with her, but I think she will frown at the size. :(

Indiana State? She would qualify for in state tuition with that GPA (there was a recruiter at my D’s high school who told me this - the minimum requirement is a 3.0). That is a MSEP benefit. Also Ball State in Indiana grants in-state tuition for a 3.0. There’s a little college in Nebraska - Chadron State that is ranked on US News and costs about $12,000 to attend (all in, including room and board). She should cop some scholarship. Like this one:

Eagle Presidential
Students must have a 23+ ACT / 1590+ SAT score, 3.0+ grade point average and graduate in the top half of graduating class to be considered for this award provided the CSC Scholarship Application is fully completed and postmarked by the January 15 deadline. Recipients will receive a four-year, one-half tuition scholarship to apply up to 16 credit hours of on-campus tuition for eight consecutive semesters. Students must enroll full-time with CSC and maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to qualify for the renewal each year.

I’ve also found some very affordable colleges in Minnesota as well as the Dakotas. Minot State in ND is very affordable. And ranked.
