scholarships for International student

My seniorchild attends an international school and I am curious about scholarships.
Having a 3.84 gpa, sat 2090, act 33. They do not give class rankings.
We are looking at Uof M, Norte Dame, Vanderbuilt, Northwestern.
Can you give me suggestions of what is out there, thanks

Sorry, neglected to identify we are Americans attending an American school.
We will not be eligible for student aid.
Any suggestions are welcome…

Northwestern and Notre Dame do not give merit scholarships, only need based aid, I believe. UMich does give some awards to out of state students, but not that many. Vanderbilt has some merit aid awards, again very few, and gives mostly need based aid.

He can apply to Vandy and UMich and MAYBE he will garner one of the merit awards, but if I were you and finances were a concern, I’d be looking into some other schools where he would be MORE likely to get merit aid.

The big question is how much are you willing to pay…because his merit aid would need to make up the difference. At some places, even a somewhat generous award might not do so…depending on your finances.

1) Have you spoken with the guidance counselor at your child’s school? Many of the counselors at the international schools are quite expert on matching their graduates with the right college/university back home in the US.

2) Have you checked the residence rules in the state(s) where you own property and/or the state of your last residence? It is possible that your child can claim residence in that state for attendance at public colleges/universities.

3) Have you run any of the EFC calculators? Two good ones are at [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) and at [College Calculators - savings calculators - college costs, loans](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>Calculate Your Cost – BigFuture | College Board) When you know what the colleges/universities are likely to expect you to pay (and chances are they will expect you to pay more), you will have a better idea of which are financially viable for you.

4) Take a look at the threads by momfromtexas on locating merit scholarships:

The specific scholarships mentioned may no longer exist, but the search strategies can be very helpful.

5) Even though you are US citizens, have a look at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.state.gov/) Then check out the counselors at the advising center closest to you. If no one in that office has worked with a student like your child lately, they have colleagues in other offices who have the expertise you need.

I do wish you and your child all the best. I was almost in your shoes.

Are you a resident of any state? If not, your son will be considered a non-resident to the publics (like UMich).

Stats aren’t likely high enough for merit from Vandy. NU and ND don’t give merit scholarships.

UMich costs about $50k+ for non-residents, so if you need a lot of scholarship money, then this might not work for you. A girl from our community just got a $10k per year scholarship to UMich with similar stats.

How much can you pay each year? That will likely determine where your son should apply because if you can pay most of the costs, then he’ll only need a small scholarship.

However, if your son needs a BIG scholarship in order to go to college, then he would need to apply to schools that are ranked below UMich in order to get a big scholarship (from the schools that give them).

Big merit scholarships are typically awarded to students whose stats are in the top 5-10% of the college. Right now, your son’s stat (while very good) are in the “mid 50 range” (students who are below the top 25% of the school).

For instance, at Vanderbilt, students in the mid 50s range, have ACTs 30 - 34. So, the top 25% have ACTs of 35+.

For your son to get big merit scholarships (if that’s what’s desired), he’ll need to apply to the schools that will give them for his stats… See the link below…
