Scholarships for International Students

Hello everyone,

I am international student and I going to apply for need blind full need financial aid.Some colleges do not offer full need.So I want to ask if they are any scholarships for international students.I search for scholarships in my country but they have only for post-graduates or graduate studies.Maybe this thread is already exists and I apologize for that.

Thank you

There are a number of threads regarding need based financial aid for international students, and merit aid too…just look on the subject lists and scroll down…you’ll see them.

Bottom line…if you need a FULL scholarship (not need based) you need to know that there are not a lot of such awards period…never mind for international students.

Re: need based at schools that meet full need and are need blind for admissions…remember that the SCHOOL computes your need based on your family’s income and assets in U.S. dollars. There are not a lot of schools that are BOTH need blind for admissions AND guarantee to meet full need for international students. These schools are also amongst the most competitive for admissions so you would need to be a very competitive college applicant to be even considered for admission. About 90% of students who apply to such schools are NOT accepted each year.

thumper1 thank you for your answer it was very helpful:)Thank you again:)

Keep in mind how tough economics are right now for everyone. If the college doesn’t have enough money to help home grown students, why should they help you? Answer: only if you bring something very special to the campus is it worth it.

By all means, dream and work on making your dreams come true – but it may be that you come here as a graduate student instead of as an undergraduate. Make some back up plans (students here have to do that too!) so you have some happy options.

Are you asking about private scholarships or colleges that give scholarships?

How much can your family pay each year?

What are your stats?

check ave maria university

money…

You mention Ave Maria U frequently. Does it give big aid or scholarships to international students?

yes they do

I’ve read the Ave Maria website carefully. It is a FAFSA only school. No where does it say that it can meet the FULL FINANCIAL NEED of students. The site discusses scholarships available to international students, and that is good…at least there are some. The price to attend seems modest compared to other private Catholic colleges but, if you don’t have the money it will still be expensive to attend.

Money…where does it say that international students full need can be met? I don’t see that Ave Maria meets the full need of U.S. Citizens either.

The school does say that they are encouraging international diversity. It’s an option, but I’m not sure it’s a financial “slam dunk” for a needy international student.

Ave Maria has some automatic scholarships, but they are not for high amounts. The highest amount is for $10k. They have some competitive ones for $15k per year.

[Ave Maria University](http://www.avemaria.edu/Institutional/)

And, if you scroll down, it has some additional small grants for those with lower EFCs. Obviously not helpful for an int’l student.

I don’t see how an int’l student with high need could afford this school, but perhaps one that could contribute $20k+ and had high stats could get a scholarship to pay the rest.

Ty for your answers:)

There aren’t many private scholarships for int’ls. However, you might find some Greek organizations that would give a Greek student a small scholarship.

However, be aware that such scholarships would not pay for a private education in the US.

How much will your parents pay each year? Aid is based on family income/assets. Aid is not based on what your parents think they can pay.

Frankly, since you haven’t taken the SAT yet, how do you know that your scores will be high enough for such elite schools?

I know I searched in greek organizations for scholarship but they did not offer for undergraduates studies only for graduates.Also in the case that I will not take a full need also we have the option of private loan.I live only with my mother and her income is very low around 10k but my grandmother contributes also so the income goes to 15k.
I know that SAT are ‘‘difficult exams’’ but some problems do not allowed me to give them earlier.I dont know if they will be good enough. I didnt take them yet.But we will see.For now I m preparing for the test.

@Olymom I have extra options.If I will not get in I will probably study in my country this is something that I dont want it so much.But thank you for your advices:)

Since you have “high need” then you might want to eliminate the schools that are “need aware” for int’ls students.

And, since your family can contribute little or nothing towards your education, then your choices will be very limited. Some full need schools do not give int’ls enough money to travel back and forth to their home countries or give enough for personal expenses. Very few int’l students can study in the US when their family is so low-income that they can’t contribute anything.

It’s a good thing that you have some other college choices within your country. Since your need is great and you don’t have SAT scores yet, your chances at such top schools are very iffy right now.

I understand. Then I have to wait for my SAT exams and we will see.Thank you all of u for ur advices.They were really helpful:)

Thank you again:)

What you should do is email each of the colleges on your list and ask what financial/merit aid is available for international students. Some of those schools you have listed have shown up lists as being need blind for international students and meet 100% of what they define as need. However, things have changed a lot in this economy, so you need to find out what the current situation is.

None of those school except for Cal Tech (and possibly McGill) give out ANY merit awards. It’s all financial aid.

Find out how they define need for international student so you can get some idea what kind of aid they can offer you.

Bear in mind that the schools you have picked are all super reach schools for top US students, and no one would recommend that a list be only of such schools. However, you might be in the situation of wanting only those top schools or nothing in the US. If that is the case, your list is fine. But if your object is to get into a college in the US, you have a very small chance applying to only such selective schools.

McGill awards merit aid to international students on an equal basis as to Canadian students. There are basic scholarships ($3000 to $4000/year) and major scholarships (up to full tuition) but competition for major scholarships is very high.

@thumper1 and @mom2collegekids
They don’t explicitly put it in their website but they are quite generous. I know this because my nephew went there and got a good scholarship despite having a average stats.
25k is reasonable and yet 87% of the students have scholarships.

@mom2college kids
I have to agree with you. Internationals who expect everything to be free would have a hard time here (unless you have high stats thus making you a prized student there and offer you something not listed in the website). Internationals who want all free should limit themselves to the 8 schools.

@helen
It is really very hard to get need blind full need for International students. These would probably be limited to:

 1. MIT, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Massachusetts
 2. Harvard University in Massachusetts
 3. Princeton University in New Jersey
 4. Yale University in Connecticut
 5. Williams College in Massachusetts
 6. Middlebury College in Vermont
 7. Dartmouth College in New Hampshire
 8. Amherst College in Massachusetts

@moneyp Middlebury is Need-Aware for International Students. I personally know some people who got 50K+ in Grants though.
