Scholarships for OOS?

Hey guys, I got accepted into UIUC and I want to thank you all one more time for chancing me =D

but looking at the cost of attendance, it falls in around 44K/year...I don't know if it is really worth absorbing 216K debt (not even counting grad school!) for an engineer. Do you guys know how much merit-based financial aid they give out for OOS students?

I posted my stats below, do you think I can get any financial aid?

thanks in advance for your time guys, I really appreciate it

they’d prolly give u like 100K for that a year. stop trippin man.

quit being sarcastic lol, their cost of attendance is 44K/year
do I have any real shot?

Speculation isn’t going to help. You need to wait like the rest of us to find out what kind of merit aid you qualify for. I understand that merit awards usually come out mid-march.

I had stats similar to yours, but with ~34 ACT, almost no extra-curriculars, no volunteer hours, and a top-1% class rank. They give me 12k per year. I’d be very surprised if they didn’t give you the OOS scholarship.

The 44k per year is very misleading. In reality you pay much less than that. The costs break down like this:
Tuition/Fees 27,944 +3,176
Room/board 9,284
Textbooks 1,200
Other expenses 2,510

-If you live frugally, your “other expenses” + “textbooks” will be only a few hundred dollars.
-Room and board is only expensive the first year, when you’re forced into university-mandated housing. However, you don’t have to buy a meal plan if you live at Europa House, which is $5000/year (I wish I had known this)
-After freshmen year, you pay much less for housing (apartment rooms are $300 to $500 / month).
-With that much AP/IB credit, you could be out of UIUC in three years. I had a 5 on 8 AP exams: even though I didn’t do three years of a language in high school, I can still get out of here in three years, which I plan on doing.

Hope this helps.

balthezar: mid-march, i’ll keep that in mind. thanks

saturninus: wow 12k/year…very informative response, I think it would be a major game changer if I got that scholarship and/or if I could finish in 3 years! thanks for letting me know

saturninus :you are UIUCer now?

“With that much AP/IB credit, you could be out of UIUC in three years.”
do you mean that if you already took AP Calculus or AP Physics , you don’t need to take same courses in college?

Tony, if you scored a 4 or 5 in most cases, you get some kind of credit for it. Check out their AP credit page at [U</a> of I Admissions: Advanced Placement](Academics, Undergraduate Admissions, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)

I’m a bit curious also. I have seen that 12k/year scholarship, but how selective is it and how many do they give out per department/overall? I think getting that scholarship is a huge game changer for attending U of I.

does anyone know how selective or the minimum requirements for this oos scholarship? do i have a shot? 31 ACT (34 Math, 31 English, 31 Science, 29 Reading). 4.08 weighted, 3.98 weighted. near top 10% i believe. Most rigorous math and science coursework offered at high school. Accepted into College of Engineering. Listed as Civil now, might go EE or AeroE.

@tonyecc: I’m at UIUC now. Going in, I had a 5 on:
-Mechanics
-Electromagnetism
-Calculus AB and Calculus BC
-European History
-US History
-US Gov / Politics
-Chemistry
-Computer Science A
I also got credit on the Rhetoric class required by UIUC due to my SAT reading score.
To be a sophomore you need 30 credits, but I ended up with about 45. I’m pretty sure I’m on track to get a B.S. in 3 years.

Please note, you can save quite a bit of time if you take 3 or more years of one language, and also if you do well on a foreign language/lit exam! They are very, very liberal with what they give credit for. This was one of the major reasons UIUC appealed to me.

@einstein10:
I believe they give the scholarship to about 100 people. I don’t know how many OOS people in the US get accepted. You have a shot, but the ACT score might be below average.

thanks saturninus. yeah, i was worried that might be the case
