Scholarships for OOS?

Hey guys, I got accepted into GT and I want to thank you all one more time for chancing me =D

looking at the cost of attendance, it falls in around 37K/year...while it is really quite a steal compared to a lot of high-end engineering schools' OOS cost of attendance, I don't know if it is really worth absorbing almost 150K debt (not even counting grad school!) to become an engineer. Do you guys know how much merit-based financial aid they give out for OOS students?

I posted my stats below, do you think I can get any scholarships? (I applied in time for the PSP deadline, I have not been notified of anything so far, so I'm assuming that I did not become a semifinalist)

thanks in advance for your time guys, I really appreciate it

I don’t think there are any merit scholarships other than National Merit. Most aid goes to Georgians or minorities.

all right, well I guess that is settled then. Thanks for letting me know!

This it NOT true. In addition to OOS grants, Tech also awards scholarships through individual schools. Alumni groups also award scholarships which are often matched in value by Tech. I know numerous people who got substantial grants to come to Tech from OOS.

Actually, there are many endowed scholarships that are given to OOS students. You have to contact the financial aid office to see if any are applicable. In addition, you can see outside scholarships.

Is it worth it? That’s up to you. What is your in-state option?

I’m in the same boat. No PSP notification yet though by email. Though, I didn’t get an “Accepted” email either, I found out by checking Buzzport. Personally, I think my app is pretty good, besides a somewhat mediocre gpa.

3.6 UW GPA, 3.9 W GPA
AP’s: (10 in all) U.S. History (3), English Language (5), English Literature, Political Science, Economics, Latin-Vergil, Chemistry (5), Biology (5), Physics (5)

SATII’s: 800 Math IIC, 790 Physics, 760 Chemistry, 750 Biology
Extra-Cirriculars:
Science Olympiad - 4 years- competed for four years, placed at State every year.

Science Bowl - 3 years - placed 5th and 3rd sophomore and junior year at state competition. team captain this year.

JCL (Latin Club) - 4 years - board member for three years of school’s largest club. host/attend latin conventions with academic competitions such as certamen (latin quizbowl) and such.

University Research - 2 years - researched at local university under physics professor everyday for a couple hours. last year won 1st palce science far at district and county level in the category of physics (used a project i completed while at lab). working on writing a publishable paper right now, alongside two graduate students involving characterizing the electronic band structure of single walled carbon nanotubes.

Computers/linux- made own linux distribution. on ubuntu-california support team.

Sports: Varsity Lacrosse - 2 years - starter, lettered

I don’t know… I think I’m pretty qualified, besides my GPA. I know its a pretty important factor, but the school I’m coming from is pretty difficult. This year, alone, we had 60 National Merit Semi-Finalists, of which only a handful had unweighted GPA’s over 3.7. The grading at my school is a little wacky, but most of us that are above 3.5’s and taking all the AP classes have a pretty good understanding of what’s going on, as demonstrated by our test scores.

Regardless, I didn’t receive any PSP info via email (I also didn’t get an acceptance email), and I can’t see anything on Buzzport (only “Welcome Accepted Freshmen”). What other scholarships are available based on merit?

Also, do you think I stand a chance for honors program?

My in-state option is Berkeley (which is pretty good), but it might be tough to get in (applied EECS, toughest major to get admission-- says Berkeley).

Yeah for some reason my edit never came through. I did actually mean to say that I knew alumni organizations do give out scholarships. The second statement still stands, though.

G.P. Burdell: My in-state option would probably be UCSD/mayyyybe UCLA (I don’t think I’m getting into Berkeley) and its rank 16 in EE, whereas Georgia Tech is rank 5 in nation for EE…
I’m not really sure what to do, because since graduate school matters a lot more than undergrad, I’m wondering if it’s ok to attend a UC (which would be relatively cheaper for me) and then attend a prestigious engineering school like Georgia Tech for grad school? It would save some money haha.

btw, would we get PSP notification online? Or would we get it through the mail along with the mailed acceptance package?

I think you will get into UCLA and UCB…pretty impressive stats

shankadatanka: no, honestly I would be very surprised if UCLA accepted me, let alone berkeley. I would’ve had a good shot but my GPA is total crap…

Word dude.

My personal opinion (and this is just my opinion if I happened to be an 18 year old California student - I know nothing about your situation, interests, or career aspirations) is that I would take Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD in-state over GT OOS. All are very good engineering schools. I would only consider going to GT OOS if UCLA / UCSD were within $5,000 per year of GT on tuition + fees (and even then, I would only consider it). I would need a PS full-ride from GT before I would consider GT over Berkeley.

If you graduate from any of those UC schools with a good GPA, you can attend any engineering graduate school. Also, all of those schools have plenty of research. If you’re looking for a prestigious professional program (e.g. law school or an MBA), then Berkeley > GT/UCLA > UCSD but it’s not that big of a spread between any of them. Now, the GT to 2nd tier UC school (UCD, UCI, UCSB) is a different situation.

Not sure if this is very helpful, but I have a friend who applied early notification OOS to GT and got $12,000/yr in merit scholarships. I’m pretty sure your test scores are better and your course load is harder, though i would guess your UW GPAs are about the same.

G.P. Burdell: hmm that’s good insight. Thanks for that, it really clears up some of the doubts I was having.

mel2592: was that Presidential Scholarship? If it was from one of the alumni groups then that’s a pretty impressive amount…
