I apologize if this has already been asked! I've recently been accepted to a (music) summer program and while most of my tuition was covered by aid, there is still a small amount that I know I cannot pay on my own.

I wanted to ask if anyone here knows of any scholarships specifically for summer camps or ones that will give $$ for students planning on attending a camp? I've scanned through most of the scholarship threads but they seem to (naturally) be geared more towards college scholarships.

Thanks in advance! :D

Are there any local music competitions you could enter? Often there is a cash prize/scholarship which could be applied towards a summer music program.

As SpiritManager suggested, look at the local sources first.

You have to think a bit outside the box, and here is where you network helps.

Depending on your specific financial circumstances, and your level of ability, it is possible to find a patron, either an individual or a music, civic, faith based group that might help.

Playing gratis in exchange for aid for services, at functions, or in home concerts are a possibility. Be creative. But you’ve gotta be good, and be willing to prove why you want and need the money. This type of largess does not come easy, but it is out there.

Good luck.

How small is “small”? If you don’t already have a part time job, is it possible that you could make the money in this way? When is the payment due to your program?

I don’t know if were talking voice or instrumental here but here are some ideas:

First Communion services are coming soon in many areas. Can you provide music before the services?

Cocktail hours at any community functions.

Graduation ceremonies including elementary and middle schools, public and private.

Assisted living facilities.

Local restaurants that might want background music.

Lessons for young children with an interest in your chosen field.

My child has done all of the above plus some wedding cocktail hours. Sometimes as community service and other times for pay (sometimes meager and sometimes lucrative). If you want to be a musician and think about earning a living in this field, you’ve got to be willing to get out there - you never know your prospective audience.

One instance of community service was at a memorial and one of the people in attendance approached him after and offered him assistance in the future. Help comes from unexpected places all the time. Get out there!

As for a small amount that you need to earn on your own, there’s babysitting, raking leaves, tutoring… I’ll bet you could make $40 per week if you started today. You might ask at your school’s counseling office - tell them you need to make money so that it will be possible for you to accept this help that’s already been offered. Impress upon them that you’re willing to work to make this happen.

Theres a fair deal of scholarships (not given by a school but given by third parties) which are given as essentially a cash award that can be put towards any educational expense–tuition, instruments etc. and I’m sure a summer program would qualify; check in your schools guidence office.

Thank you for the advice. The program covered all but $1,000- not an amount I personally consider small, but in comparison with the price of the camp, the package was very generous. The rest of the tuition ($1,000) is due by the first week in April, so this is why I’m quite nervous LOL. I think will call the camp and speak with the financial aid dept. to see if anything can be worked out…I’ll also head down to my gc and see if she can help at all.

Thanks again :)
