I am in desperate need for scholarships, however, i am in this odd hole in which my grades are not stellar enough for academic scholarships and i have little community service hours. I have financial need (anything above a state school is a serious stretch) but i don’t think I have enough financial need to receive scholarships catered to those who have financial need.
If you are looking for merit scholarships, you should look towards schools where your stats are in the top 10% - 25% of accepted students.
FA packages cover the difference between what the school calculates you should be able to pay and their sticker price, although many schools leave a gap. There is no sense of “having enough” need; you either have need or you don’t. Unless you are trying to say that you want a FA package composed just of grants and not loans.
Have you looked at the FA/scholarship sections of your state schools’ websites? What are your SAT/ACT scores? A lot of colleges will give test score/GPA-based scholarships. I’ve been surprised to see a lot of merit scholarships(tuition discounts) for scores/grades that are average/above average. The higher the scores/GPA the more you will get, but you may be able to get something. . .
Look at your parents (including step parents) employers. Sometimes the bigger businesses have scholarships for employees and dependents of employees.
Are you or any of your parents in any civic organizations, like Lions, Kiwanis, Jaycees, etc? If so, see if any of them offer scholarships.
Maybe your church or temple (or the wider denomination) offers scholarships, ask your clergy person.
And, finally, as your guidance counselor if he/she knows of any local ones.
Some of these may only be good for a year. It will give you time to get started at your school. Maybe you can find a job at or near your school and save that money. And, look for a decently paid job or internship for next summer to pick up the difference for next year.
