Are there any scholarships for being a high school valedictorian? I am already accepted into college so I don’t need any guaranteed scholarships from schools but I was just wondering if there are any general scholarships for valedictorians. Thanks!
did you ask your GC? There are states that give scholarships to Vals.
School independent ones on the basis of being valedictorian alone? Don’t know of any.
Unfortunately, merit is a very uncommon scholarship criteria. You’ll find thousands of scholarships earmarked for certain religious groups, 4H clubs, Taco Bell employees, etc., but few that truly are awarded to the most academically impressive applicant. Scour your school’s counseling office. If your counselor can’t help, then look for statewide stuff. But I wouldn’t count on merit scholarships.
My D received valedictorian awards from both the HS and the state totaling about $2500. The award from the state was only allowed to be used at a school in our state- I believe it could be public or private. Her college did not offer this specific type of award.
If you are starting college in Fall 2017, it’s a little late to be looking for scholarships for the upcoming academic year.
How much do you need?
Pretty Sure Ole Miss has scholarship for Vals.
This student is already accepted to a college. Unless the student declines their admission offer for fall 2017, I don’t think Ole Miss is an option. @my2caligirls
@Smotherboard did your college give you any scholarships? Is the family contribution affordable for your family?
the State ofTexas offers one year tuition to any public university for each Valedictorian
Are you wondering about scholarships for Vals for yourself…or just wondering in general?
@thumper1 My college gave me nothing. I just got Pell grants and Zell Miller (I live in Georgia). I still have about $6000 worth of expenses that my parents can’t help with. I am a valedictorian and was just wondering if I could get anything for being one. Georgia Tech offers nothing unless you’re a val/sal from Atlanta Public Schools, so I was hoping there was something out there for valedictorians in general.
What’s the $6000 you can’t cover? Room/board?
Did you accept the full $5500 federal loan?
@Madison85 It is room/board and meal plan expenses. I only got $2700 from the government because my dad makes too much money I guess, even though he isn’t helping out with school expenses.
So you got the Zell Miller…and $2700 in Pell.
Are you attending UGA or GT? If so, the Zell Miller would cover your tuition costs. Then you would have the $2700 in Pell Grant…and you can take a $5500 Direct Loan. Get a job and earn some money…and seems to me…your costs would be covered.
What about the $5500 federal loan. Did you accept it? That, and a summer job could cover your $6k shortfall.
