Scholarships & MeritAids 2017 Applicants

@uofmmom - I will have him call. How did you find the name of your admissions counselor?

@jpc763 you can call and get the name but this link might also help you track that person down:

https://admissions.tc.umn.edu/counselors/directory.html

@jpc763, yes, she used the info from the link JBStillFlying just posted.

@JBStillFlying & @uofmmom - Thanks, S17 got an email today from U of M asking him to confirm enrollment. We would if they gave us all the info we need!

@jpc763 - can’t think of a better opener than “in response to this request to confirm enrollment, I have a few questions . . . .”

Good luck to him!

Accepted to honors/10k NMF/10k National Gold for a total of 20k/yr.

35 ACT/4.0 UW/5.095 W w/ highest course rigor, non-reciprocity OOS female applicant to CSE.

An admissions counselor told me the National would increase to reflect the tuition differential, but I’m not sure if that’s true in light of comments above.

@blackdog23 - can you please double check the wording of the National scholarship you received and report back here? Unless it’s in writing I wouldn’t necessarily take the admission counselor’s word (because he/she could be misinformed). I’d follow what’s actually specified in the documents they sent you.

But if that’s correct that does make the situation a lot better off for whole bunch of people!!!

@JBStillFlying, @uofmmom - I got a call back from admissions and was told that my S17 was given the National Scholarship for $10K! His letter is going out today per his admission counselor. Very excited as this pushes Minnesota to the top of his list! Thanks for the suggestion to call the admissions office.

Just wondering—are your aid offers showing up on MyU?

Minnesota is my top choice school. I applied mid October, was accepted CLA mid November, and then was accepted to the Honors program in early December. I’m OOS on the east coast, have a 2190 on the SAT, lots of EC’s and a 3.9 UW/4.3 W GPA). Are these stats reasonable for a scholarship? I’m starting to worry as I haven’t received anything.

@Isaroo - No, they are not. They are supposed to show up in the snail mail. Others had received them and were posting. I had not heard anything even though my Son’s stats were similar to yours. At the recommendation of people on this thread, I called the office of admissions and they called me back today saying that my son was going to be granted the National scholarship. I would recommend you call them as well.

Congrats to your son! I just called and they gave me a very generic answer about how all scholarship offers will be made by the end of of March.

@jpc763 That’s great! Isn’t it a relief? Congrats to your son!

Ok I’m calling tomorrow. I have 2 different admissions people one for Engineering and one for my state. I really have questions about if and when I might get any sort of Merit Aid. OOS is still very affordable but so much easier to decide if I know what I have to pay!

Agree 100% @Seacoast . Still debating here in CA if I should proactively reach out to admissions since we haven’t heard either.

Well I’m not waiting anymore…it’s getting really hard to know what school to choose. Don’t get me wrong I’m so excited that I even have a choice but not planning on paying for it forever. They really need to pull the packages together. Wouldn’t it be nice to just know…time is ticking…I won’t get a dime no financial need on anyone’s definition so Merit is my only chance to help my parents. I worked too hard not to ask.

@Seacoast & @Banker1 - Call. Tell them you really need this info and you know others have been able to call and find out. I told them: “You want me to confirm my enrollment but I can’t without the whole picture. Minnesota is one of our top choices but we have other options that are much more affordable. Can you check to see if I am being considered for the National scholarship?”. It took from Thursday until today for the counselor to call back but he told me that my S was granted the national scholarship and the letter was going out today.

@jpc763 can I ask what school? I heard Engineering is different, maybe not? Also when did your son get in? This will help. I know it’s a long shot but I have to turn over every single stone and pebble…thanks so much!

These are university-wide scholarships so hopefully are NOT school or college dependent. That can be a question you ask them. I’m curious myself

@Seacoast - My S was accepted November 15. He was accepted into CSE. The counselor I talked to was neither specific to our state or his college. He just happened to be the one that I was connected to.

My d17 accepted into College of Biological Sciences. Applied around 31 Oct. Heard back mid Dec. Her stats 31 ACT, 3.9+ uw, top 5%, Illinois resident. ECs include: Science Olympiad, marching band, student council, NHS, crew/pit for plays & musicals, plus other ECs like GS & church mission trips but not sure if she listed all of them.

Got notified by mail around 18 Jan of National Scholarship $10k.
