Scholarships & MeritAids 2017 Applicants

Has anyone gotten any scholarships from CEHD?

Same here - only loans in the “offer” letter. We were surprised and like stated, with the tuition hike and the rumors of more to come this school is no longer an attractive option. My DD is disappointed but I’m not willing to pay that price tag as an out of state student for a state school. I was disappointed as the school heavily recruited her, she was admitted to the College of Science and Engineering and they spent a lot of time telling us how much they want to attract females to that college, well…should have made it a bit more attractive

@MamacatTX - Did your DD get any merit aid?

No - she didn’t get anything
Class Rank 12%
ACT 34
GPA (W) 5+
IB student

We were really disappointed - no merit or scholarship just a suggestion for a really big Parent Plus Loan - No thanks

@MamacatTX - When did she apply?

October

@MamacatTX - I would call. That does not seem right. She has great stats and applied before the deadline. I would find out on the U of M side if something was considered “late”.

@MamacatTX’s daughter has excellent stats. In the past the National was reserved for those well under the top 10% of class rank but not sure what the criteria is this year. Being female in CSE is actually an advantage so there is a chance for something. I’d call or e-mail and explain that UMN is the #1 but attending will be next to impossible due to finances. Lay out the details: who’s the #2 choice, how much will your net COA be for that school vs. UMN, and can they meet you at least part way. You never know what could happen as a result.

We visited the campus the end of February and sat down with her admissions adviser, I’ll reach out to him, can’t hurt .

Good luck @MamacatTX - keep us posted!

Did anyone get the maroon and gold scholarship?

OOS Applied in October, admitted in November. Presidential Scholarship arrived last Friday. No email, just a letter in the mail. Engineering student and we didn’t think he was going to get anything due to 2 high income parents.

$0 for financial aid but wasn’t expecting it either.
1440 new SAT
4.3 weighted GPA
Varsity sports player
NHS
Community service/works/few clubs
6 AP’s

OOS CA, Applied in October, admitted off waitlist into Carlson in March. $3k financial aid, the rest was loans, very disappointing. The rest were all loans. 2220 SAT. 3.33 uw/4.0w, lots of ec’s and AP’s. With the tuition hikes I think unfortunately UMTC will not be an affordable option for me.

My DD is instate. Accepted to CLA then got a phone call that her first choice, Carlson, had a spot. The financial aid letter…eek! $18k for parent loan. We are waiting to see if she gets Carlson scholarships. That $18k is tough but what can you do?

My son was accepted CSE and in majoring in physics. He is instate and received the Iron Range scholarship. I am upset in retrospect because our school doesn’t even offer the PSAT and so he had no chance for some of the larger scholarships. The parent loan pricetag was $15,000 and we have 5 kids and are both teachers! He will be graduating with an AA degree two weeks before he graduates high school so he has only a little over 2 years left. It made the decision to turn down the half tuition scholarship at UMD a little easier. Yes, he will have more private loans (no way we are affording $15,000 a year) but will still have less than most of his counterparts.

Does anyone know when the College of Liberal Arts scholarships will be sent out by?

@wakejul he - and you! - will not regret the decision to attend CSE rather than UMD (a fine school but not the caliber of CSE, which is really a top-ranked science and engineering program). Definitely an investment that will pay dividends in the future! Good luck to him!
