Just received my acceptance packet in the mail today and in it was a letter stating that I received UTK's Out of State Excellence scholarship rewarding me $40,000 over the course of four years. I couldn't be more excited or relieved right now!

Congratulations Kayyla - S got his letter for in-state scholarship - $6,000 per year. That with his lottery scholarships will make $11,000.

Great Christmas presents for you both.

Also remember - scholarships are done yet. There are still the Chancellor Scholarships which will be announce in a couple of months. Good luck.

I also got the UT Volunteer Scholarship. Btw, how do you know how much you’re getting for the HOPE? And does anyone know the general cost of attendance for UTK with tuition & board (I can’t find a general amount on the website)?

Hope Scholarship is $2,000 per semester. The General Assembly Merit Scholarship is another $500 per semester. That will give S a total of $5,000 per year.

The lottery scholarships are based solely on GPA and ACT/SAT results. The GPA is recalculated based on the numeric grade in the class. Hope scholarship is 3.0 GPA and 21 ACT. GAMS is 3.75 GPA and 29 ACT.

GPA Calculation is based on the following grading scale. No extra weighting for honors or AP.

93 - 100 = A = 4
85 - 92 = B = 3
75 - 84 = C = 2
70 - 74 = D = 1
69 or below = F = 0

What state do you live in? Based on the FAFSA website, it could be $6000 pet year and GAMS adds another $1500.

Of course the cost can (and probably will) go up, here are the current year amounts per semester.

From http://web.utk.edu/~bursar/Fall2012FeesUG.pdf
In state tuition - $4,546
Out-of-state tuition - $13,791

Residence Halls - [UT Knoxville | University Housing](<a href=“Home - University Housing”>Home - University Housing)
Double Occupancy for this year was about $2,500 to $2750 per semester.

Dining Plans - [UT Dining](http://www.utdining.com/) - About $1,800 per semester.

Here is the Cost estimator too [The University of Tennessee: Estimating Costs](<a href=“About Financial Aid - One Stop Student Services”>About Financial Aid - One Stop Student Services)

they estimate books to be just under $1K
Transportation at $800 (that is highly volatile based on your specific situation)
Miscellaneous needs - $1800 (again - this will change based on your needs and taste)

With everything I have right now ($6000 from VS + $6000 HOPE + $1500 GAMS), looks like I’ll be about covered each year right? I added your costs and its just under $13,000.

it is $6,000 and $1,500 if you go three semesters. In 2009, the legislature approved students to use the lottery in the summer, but it is still only 8 semester’s worth. This just allows you to graduate early if you want. I use to work for them. I left a few months ago for “an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

So based on the traditional Fall/Spring semesters calendar, Hope is $4K, GAMS - $1, and Volunteer is $6K for $11K. Enough for Tuition and Books.

Here’s hoping we all get Chancellor scholarships to cover room and board.

Ah okay. That sucks. There’s still a few thousand dollars that I need covered.

Also note the cost i have above are based on semester - not full year.

Annualized cost from estimator (In-state)

Tuition & Fees - $9,092
Room & Board - $8,752

Total required - $17,844

Additional Items to budget

Books - $1,492
Transportation - $1,638 (this seems high for in-state that isn’t flying)
Miscellaneous - $3,772

Total Estimated Cost - 24,756

rxllrn - are you local or do you have to live in a dorm? That will save you a huge amount if you commute.

Also, they still have not decided on the Chancellor Scholarships. Maybe you will be awarded one of those.

Also you need to research the Ned McWherter Scholarship. Like the Hope/GAMS it is administered by TSAC, but is a competitive scholarship and is not guaranteed.

I live in Memphis right now, so I would have to live in a dorm.

By the way, thank you for letting me know about the scholarship!

@Galaxyfigment: Congrats to your S!!! I got the same scholarship package a few days ago. Admittedly, I was getting worried because UTK was the first school I had applied to, but I’d gotten scholarship info from all the others weeks ago; it feels great to have something from my in-state option! Also, thanks for letting us know that more money could be on the way; my M was worried that the $11,000 would be all I got.

SuperCC - There are still the Chancellor Scholarships, the department scholarships, and the Haslem Scholars program that haven’t been awarded. These are the more competitive scholarships. Haslam Scholars program is separate from the main scholarships and required a nomination (could be made by the student too). Don’t expect anything on the department scholarships until late Feb/March. The Chancellor scholarships are suppose to be announced in late January.

Good Luck

Does anyone know when interviews for the Haslam scholarship are announced? I understand that the semifinalist interviews are held in January / early February.

I think I read somewhere that the preliminary interviews would be conducted in January and February and the final interviews would be conducted at the Haslam Scholars Weekend sometime in March.

Last year people mentioned that they got notification being a semi-finalist around the 20th of January. Finalist were announced between Feb 21 and 22. Haven’t been able to find out when last years Scholars weekend was.

Has anyone heard back yet for Honors College acceptance?

No, but my friend said that she got her aid with her letter ($20,000) Did anyone else get theirs
