Scholarships offered at MSU

Hi! This is my first posting after reading college confidential for years. I currently have a junior in high school and am wondering what kind of academic scholarship money has been offered to this years admitted freshman. I understand that there is a ADS scholarship competition but am more curious of the kind of "free money" was being made available to students who are not in the top 5% of their class....but close.

My junior currently has a 4.0 GPA, but a 28 ACT score. Has anyone with close stats received any scholarship money? Just looking for a range.

Thanks for any input!

Hello fellow newbie ! My S is a senior this year and was accepted at MSU. He did qualify to take the ADS which he describes as the hardest test by far he ever took , and unfortunately got nothing from it. He is 3.97 GPA ( unweighted ), top 5 % of his class of about 560 , and scored 33 on his ACT and received zero merit aid from MSU. They did provide a little additional need based $ ( lowered our EFC from $20,000 to $ 18,000 ) through various loans.

My S is in-state with stats similar to Barbara83’s S and did not receive any merit aid at all.

Thanks Barbara83 and wdaveo! Wow! With those stats, I thought they would’ve rec’d some sort of merit aid. I guess IF my DD gets anything, it will have to be need based only. :frowning: That is a little disheartening. Thanks for the info…really helps with decision making.

Barbara, he should at least qualify for $2k in HC grants plus $2300 stipend for a PA.

Yes, the majority of MSU’s aid is tied to need. As a top-ranked state school, its priority is to help high achieving students but low income students. U of M is the same way but they have a larger endowment so they can meet the need of instate students (as they determine it). They don’t need to hand out a lot of merit awards because they don’t need to attract top talent.

To get the better merit scholarships, you need to look to a directional U (Eastern, Western, etc). Some of the privates in Michigan have good automatic merit scholarships.

Good luck.

Subsidized loan, Unsubsidized loan, and a small work study amount is all MSU offered him.

Then you should contact them about a Professorial Assistantship.

Unfortunately, she is determined to major in materials science engineering. Only three schools in Michigan have that major, MSU, U of M-AA, and MTU. She will not consider MTU (too far…too cold…etc.). I was hoping she might see some money from MSU, but apparently the first years will be tight. I will have to push for a co-op to help us out.

Thanks for the help!

:)

2070 SAT with 4.0 GPA (top 5%) while being OOS got me $6,000.

I believe $3,000 more for Study Abroad.

OOS is a whole different animal when it comes to scholarships. In state kids get more need-based aid. OOS, high achieving kids get merit aid.
