I'm pretty annoyed that I don't see anything listed concerning a merit scholarship award... where is this listed on MySlice?

under the second tab there should be a rundown of all your financial aid considerations, including merit based scholarships.

yea i got one but not to much $3000 but hey its something i guess its something still excited that i got accepted though

Not trying to sound uppity, but I have a 1380/2070 SAT score and am top of my class… surely that deserves some type of merit scholarship? Yet none is showing up on my award letter. I don’t get it.

You should get an email that tells you that you’ve received a scholarship. From there, you go to MySlice. I’m sure you got one with those SATs and your class rank!

jusayswhat, i would expect you got some sort of a merit scholarship. My SAT scores are super similar to yours and I got one.

Hi Y’all…a couple of things:

1) Have a feeling merit scholarships were decreased this year to provide FA to both current and new students who SU wanted to accomodate

2) It is MUCH, MUCH more difficult to get a merit scholarship when admitted to Newhouse (vs other schools at Syracuse)… in addition, I think Syracuse tends to try to figure out who will actually accept their offers of admission and bases their merit awards on that…i.e. how much interest did you show in the admissions process?
Interview? Contact Newhouse professors?
3)Justsaywhat: while your stats are surely at the top end of the SYRACUSE admittance pool, they are definitely right in line with most of your peers who have been accepted to Newhouse
They cannot give all 900 or so admittees (assuming a 30% yield) a merit scholarship so other factors must be in play here…

Hope this helps, although I have a feeling it won’t…just wanted you to understand the process…my daughter is a freshman at Newhouse and she was one of very few who received a scholarship last year…top 7%, 32 ACT/ 1440 SAT but it probably wasn’t just her grades; she had very unusual EC’s directly related to communications…

what REALLY sucks is that transfers get no money unless theyre like 3.9 gpas. Last year I wouldve recieved at least 15,000 for my high school grades, now im looking at 5,000 at most probably

hey man, same here. i didn’t see any merit either

I thought it was just me, I have similar stats to those above and didn’t recieve ANY merit. I also got accepted to Newhouse though, so I guess what rodney said explains a lot. Well they may have not thought I was attending, but they have definitely driven me away altogether b/c I can’t afford college without merit. I just recieved a $20,000 a year merit package from American so obviously SU is really cutting back…

thats crazy, i got accepted to Newhouse and got a 12,000 grant and a 15,400 scholarship. i’m pretty impressed with my package.

umm… yea… they really do expect me to be able to cover $27,000 a year. happy/grateful/relieved that i got accepted & all (especially after wallowing in self pity all day after being rejected from UC davis) but do they really think that i rob banks for a living?

I’m sorry to hear that many of you have received less aid than you expected. However, keep in mind that SU as an institution has done its best in reducing its budget (freezing raises for staff, cutting staff members, a LOWER increase in tuition, etc) and they even ran a mid-year fundraiser to help as many students as possible. I myself would not be here without the generous aid.
As for merit aid, that is highly dependent on the incoming class. It will vary year by year and I believe that the college you apply and get accepted to has a big factor in determining your chances.

SU will try to keep its current student first so we didn’t expect a good fin aid package. With low 1500 SAT and 4.0 GPA (UW), we only got 12K scholarship and 9K grant which is worse than we expected.

Chancellors scholarship.

Disappointing $8,000 a year merit aid. (Do not qualify for need based aid/loans/grants. etc.)

That leaves us with $39,000 out of pocket before books/transportation, etc… On top of that, we have another son in college that will be heading to grad school when this son is a sophomore.

6000 scholarship
20300 grant
5500 loans
3200 work study

95.34 gpa
27 ACT

Eaglesfan - that’s really generous…are u going?..what is your major?

the awards seem to be really random and i think it has to do with the college being offered admittance and/or the major

im not sure where im going yet, still waiting for the fin aid packages from schools like penn state & delaware, and still waiting to hear from binghamton

i applied for economics in the college of arts & sciences

Random, indeed. And frustrating.

its not really random, the scholarship is for my academics, the loans everyone qualifies for, and the grants/work study are need based, and wen u get into a private school whose yearly cost is close to your household income, the school is going to give u the grants/work study without question
