I received my scholarships on the 17th and was pretty happy about it-- $15k/yr for national and $5k/yr for Gold-- but I was wondering if there was any chance that the $5k for Gold gets changed to $10k later on if I become a NM finalist or something. The letter didn’t say anything about the amount increasing for finalist status, in fact I think it said I would only receive the $5k if I became a finalist, but I do know the UMN scholarship page says it can be up to $10k. Anyway, I was wondering how common it was for amounts to change or for additional scholarships to be added after an initial notification. Also, is there any sort of leverage in negotiating for more than $5k on the gold? I know some universities are willing to compete for students. I’m OOS if that makes any difference.
@checht, a few years ago Gold for NMF was $10,000 and National was also $10,000. The overall total was the same as you received. Congrats.
If you had a better merit package at a similarly ranked school then sure, let UMN know because that way you can invite them to meet you part way. Doubt they’ll increase your current scholarships but they could possibly add a presidential or something. Personally, I don’t recall anyone receiving over $20,000 so you might be at the max now. But no harm in asking.
@checht, how long after receiving your admissions decision did you receive your scholarships? I just got my decision today, and I only applied on the 8th, but my notification had no mention of scholarships. Thanks!
@rileyhoffman I was accepted October 5th so I received them a little over a month later. But you should get yours soon because I think that gap gets smaller as they start giving out more decisions!
@JBStillFlying Yeah it looks like what I got was pretty much the norm for people. Thanks for the reply, I will definitely see if I can get anything additional!
