Scholarships to Cincinnati?

I’m very interested in going to UC as an aspiring pre med so I will probably major in something like neuroscience, biology, etc… I was wondering what scholarships would be available to me mostly based on merit since my parents make enough money to be considered middle-class so I doubt I’ll receive hardly any federal aid with the FAFSA (will still do it). ACT is a 32 and GPA unweighted is 3.95, weighted 4.3. Cross Country 4 years, Track 2 years, National Honor Society, Key Club, and a Freshman mentor for 2 years. Already have a 5 in AP Physics I and will most likely be successful in AP Biology, AP Calculus, and Anatomy (college level through the high school). Thanks!

My son is an entering freshman, and had stats and activities very similar to yours (rather than cc/track, he was a 4-year band kid). His w/uw GPA was almost identical, and his composite ACT score was a little bit higher.

Scholarship-wise, he received a Cincinnatus scholarship (you can see it on the scholarships page), with a “booster” because he is an out of state student, which brought him up to about $6k. Then he received a one-year CEAS scholarship of $4k. And then lastly, a small Demakes Alumni scholarship. Also consider that you might be applying for local scholarships which can also add up too.

But let me make another comment here – there are really three general types of aid: merit scholarships (such as those I list above), need-based grants, and then federal and private loans. You fill out FAFSA for the latter two, need-based grants and loans. We didn’t qualify for need-based grants (for UC, but we did for virtually all of the private schools he applied to) or federal work-study. We did qualify for loans, and for the PLUS (Parent Loan for Undergrad Students).

All of this adds up into a “package” and the package is different for every school that you apply to. Merit scholarships vary dramatically from one school to another (here’s a huge hint: with your stats, and desire to go pre-med, check out Miami University’s BioEnginerring program – it is possible you may get a really good merit scholarship from them).

Thank you so much! Very informative and helpful! Cheers

You should also attempt to get into the gppa program at university of Illinois at Chicago. If accepted, and you fullfill program requirements as an undergrad, they guarantee your acceptance into medical school.

Just as a point of information, there are something like 15 BS-MD guaranteed med school admission programs around the country. Although I can’t quote the web address, there is a website that summarizes all of them. UC had one too – it is called the Connections program. URochester has the Rochester Early Medical Scholars program, Boston University has one, Northeast Ohio, and others. Every program is very competitive to get into.
