I got really sick during the semester (for over 2 months straight) and also had a death in my family - I ended up getting 3 b's and one D and I needed a C+ average (2.7+ GPA) to get my scholarships because I missed classes from going to the doctor and just being depressed. If I write the committee a letter and get a letter from the professor that I got the grade from vouching for my hardships during the year, will they still give me the money even though my GPA is 2.35? It was really unavoidable.

Are you in college or are you seeking a scholarship as an incoming freshman?

If you are already IN college, talk to the academic advisor or dean of students. If you had documented medical issue, they might grant you a probationary term for your scholarship.

If you are seeking a scholarship as an incoming freshman…well I’m not sure what to say. You can write them a letter explaining the extenuating circumstances and see what happens.

Hi kerissak,

I am sorry to hear that you had a rough first semester after all you had to overcome to get to college.

I think you would have been much better served if the professor who gave you a D had given you an incomplete instead (at least your gpa would not have taken that big hit).

I agree with thumper that you need to see your dean to explain what happened. Any documentation that you can take with you can be helpful. You need to find out if your school has a phase in process to meet the gpa (they may give you until the end of the spring semester to make the gpa cut-off).

All the best

Hi Keri,

I sure hope this all works out for you considering all you had to go thru to get the funding to go to college.

let us know how it all works out.
