Scholarships? (URM)

Are their any type of scholarships meant for extremely poor URM's (African) for Michigan? Im just wondering cause i Really Really want to go there but my income bracket my single mom makes is <30,000.

?

I don’t know specifically, but I do know that you WILL be able to go there if you want to. DO NOT let your financial situation deter you from a great education. There are grant, loans, merit scholarships, and other forms of financial aid that will get you where you need to be. best of luck!

thanks for the info bro  , because yea i really want to go but money is a problem. Im top 3 percent of my class , 3.7 GPA, lots of EC’s such as president and foudner of Model UN, President of Student Council, 250 community service hours, and i made national merit semifinalist and got a 2300 on sat so i think im ok credential-wise just not money-wise lol .

Have you sent in your app? BC after you do that, you will get a financial aid form to fill out, and just try to sell your situation to them. honestly, with your stats, i don’t think you’ll have a problem.

You will not get any money based on your ethnicity (Affirmative Action banned), but with a 2300 SAT and <30k per year income, I can see a need-based scholarship very possible. Apply and hope for the best!

I think you will get some merit money and some need-based aid. You should be ok.

There was a new scholarship instituted last year called the Michigan Tradition Scholarship. It’s described as follows:

“Recipients contribute to the overall excellence and diversity of the University community (students from underrepresented high schools, geographic areas, and socioeconomic populations).”

So, although UM can no longer consider race, you may fall into one of those categories. The scholarship is for up to $10,000 per year. I also think that you will qualify for other merit aid based purely on you stats. Good work!

PS I hope you have applied because the best chance of receiving merit money is to apply early. If not, get your application in ASAP.

Are you in-state? If you are in-state, you probably qualified for the Michigan Merit (which isn’t a lot but helps somewhat). You will probably get need-based (Pell-grants, etc) aid and even merit-aid with those stats. Michigan doesn’t award NMF awards though.

SBDad, thanks for the info about the new scholarship. My D was one of the last to receive the Michigan Scholar Award last year. Glad to see they able to reinstate something similar by changing the scope to adhere to the new law.

THX for the info SBDad :). I turned in my app early, yes, and Im going to go ahead and apply for that

To my knoweldge, you don’t have to apply for that Tradition scholarship–the University determines eligibility and considers you for it when you apply for aid. However, it’s good you’re applying early, because it’s possible that there will be more students eligible than they have awards for. You should have no worries if you’re applying now.

And in fact, with your income level you may be eligible for MPact. MPact is a program that eliminates all loans for the lowest-income residents. That means your package will be primarily grant. You may have work study, but no loans.

U-M is very committed to providing support for lower-income students. It hasn’t gotten the national press that UVa or UNC has, but it has similar policies (for residents). I think that if your income is at the level you say it is, you will find Michigan as affordable as any other place on your list.

You could probably get in to harvard, and if you did, you could go there for free. i’d consider that path before u of m.

Yea but Harvards just a brand name. Even if I could go there i wouldnt. Heres why

1.Everybodys extremely competitive
2.Its SO Hard. (I need a high GPA for dental school)

And 3, I love Michigan football . Harvards football team is…wait. they probably dont even have one. lol.

actually, from what i’ve heard, harvard isn’t too hard. might have something to do with the people that go there, who knows.
