If you received merit aid @ Vandy, could you please post your stats? Relieved to have been accepted, but REALLY would like to know what the scholarship recipients looked like for A & S? Thanks!

My D will only be getting the 5K National Merit scholarship and since we live in TN she is eligible for the 5K TN Lottery scholarship. Vanderbilt also has a Top TENN scholarship for students from TN who are #1 or 2 in their class, it is merit only (so they claim) but is not an automatic so she did not get selected. It’s 1/2 tuition. As soon as the scholarship office realized I am an employee at Vanderbilt, I was almost immediately told she did not get it. Hmmm…
D just got her acceptance to Wake today, again no money for us. So I think it will come down to either Vandy or Wake for her. As her mother, I see them being the best fits for her but think Wake would be a bit better for her personality.

hope,
As a Vanderbilt employee, don’t you get a tuition discount for students or is that just for faculty? A physician who lives across the street joked that she and her husband were both on Vanderbilt staff years ago and she kind of wished they had that benefit back as they sent their S to college a few years ago (turns out at WashU though). I mentioned that to S who said, oh, year, J (his best friend) went practically for free since both parents are med school faculty.

2300 SAT
4.0 unweighted GPA
Varsity sport for 2 years
a few publications
lots of writing awards (about three per year for three years)
about 4 Prez/Vice-Prez positions in senior year
my recs should have been pretty good (I like the teachers I asked very much, anyway!)
um…
oh yeah, 770 780 790 SATIIs (or something like that)
All 5s on my 4 AP tests
IB candidate
2/453 rank

Yes, I do work at Vandy and the amount of the tuition discount depends on your hire date. This benefit only applies to tuition, period. So I don’t know how anyone can claim currently that going to Vanderbilt with this discount is almost free because it is not. Tuition will be over $37K next year and total cost of attendance is now a bit over $52K.
Daughter also hopes to possibly go to law school, plus I am not sure if I can rely on my ex to live up to his promise to help pay for college and expenses. Yes, it is affordable for us but not easily so. Yes, I am fortunate to have this and am thankful every day for it. However, these are uncertain times and I wonder if this benefit could possibly disappear. It has been rumored in the past that this might happen.
Many other factors will affect and impact the decision that is made and I cannot elaborate on those things.

hope,
S’s friend evidently only had to pay 10% of sticker price for tuition and then of course R&B and books. He had some other kind of scholarship to help with some of this stuff if I remember correctly. While it’s still not chump change, going to Vandy at less than 15% or so of sticker does sound practically free to others.
I was fortunate that ex came through on college, but I can certainly understand your concerns. I hope things allow for your D to attend her first choice school and that Vandy continues the employee discount for tuition. I have heard and read about the salary freeze there (I teach at a cc and we are going into our third year of salary freeze) and I can sympathize with your concerns. Again, good luck to your D!
