Scholarships!!!

dragondad…It wasn’t any one thing in particular that stood out to her. She liked the layout of the campus (big without feeling overwhelming), the proximity to the urban areas, and the campus transportation system (buses, mini-rail to airport and Mall of America, tunnels for walking in the winter, etc.). She’s planning on a PharmD degree and prefers to do her undergrad at a campus that has a College of Pharmacy as well, so that was the primary reason she visited in the first place. But after about 30 mins she told my wife this was where she was supposed to go to college. I’m a big believer that things happen for a reason, so a visit that started as an OBTW trip turned into her top choice!!

She didn’t dislike any of the campuses she visited, but one in particular was “less welcoming” than the others. You’d expect a visit to be “we’d love to have you at xxxxx” as opposed to “you should feel honored that we’d consider you”. She hasn’t ruled anyplace out yet though.

BTW, Dragons? Southlake Carroll maybe?

thks, wolverine and no, nothing to do with carroll dragons. ;)

i cannot believe southlake carrol is being mentioned on the u minnesota thread XD (my hs football team got beat by them in the playoffs here in tx). but anyway, i got gold national! hopefully i still got some money from the 3 private scholarships i applied to as well… and stupid national merit! 4 points off, basically 2-3 questions. if i had gotten 2-3 more questions right i would be getting $40k over 4 years :/

abcd…Sorry to dredge up painful memories. I lived in Texas for several years while serving in the military, and was well aware of S.C.'s football program.

Congrats on your scholarship!! Hopefully you’ll get the additional funds you applied for and keep U of Minn as a potential choice. Good Luck!!

lol as bad as it sounds, i was actually happy southlake beat us. im in the marching band and our competition season was over, but we still had to go to the football games  i was glad southlake finished us off quickly so that i could go back to having a life on friday nights! and thank you Wolverine86!

Could people who received scholarships post their stats?

goldtortoise…You can read from the previous postings in this thread that our D1 got a very generous scholarship offer from U of Minn. It was a combination of scholarships, but came out to very near full ride. Her stats are:
GPA: 3.99UW/4.15W
Rank: 11/568
ACT: 36
SAT: 2400
EC’s: Standard stuff: NHS, YAC, Student Council, etc.

So I’m somewhat disappointed. I got the Gold scholarship (10k/year) and a travel abroad stipend. I realize that’s not something to complain about, but I guess I set my sights too high. I know I’m not going to get any fin aid, but my parents are making me pay for everything. I thought I had the stats to get at least 3-4k more a year.

35 act
NMSF
decent EC’s
must have been my GPA: 3.7 UW 3.8 W

oh well. best of luck to everybody else

@dumbitdown

yeah, that’s kind of why I asked–I’m in the same boat as you. I only got offered Gold National, but I felt that my stats, ECs, and “diversity” would have gotten me more.

yeah, not sure why we didn’t get anything else. i think i’m going to call after winter break is over.

by the way, did you get a letter/email about the honors college? because i haven’t received word yet which makes me think i didn’t get in

yeah i found out because i checked online on my app tracker. i didn’t get any e-mail about it, but i did get my letter in the mail (about 2 weeks after i checked online–though i think it had been online for longer before i checked). i think i’ll probably call about scholarships after break too, i feel like i really deserved more. though i much prefer minnesota to my in-state university, if i don’t receive any more scholarships, then it will be roughly $2000 a year more expensive, so my parents won’t go for it :(

yeah i think i’m going to call sometime next week as well. i don’t want to come off as arrogant but at the same time i feel as though i should be firm…tell them other state flagships (alabama, oklahoma) offer full rides to NMSF.

of course they will probably say i don’t have to attend if i don’t want to blah blah blah.

yeah i think i’ll call once the admissions office opens back up as well. when i call i’m not going to be like “i demand more money!” or anything crazy like that, i’ll just be like “it’s a shame that i might not be able to attend U of M due to insufficient scholarships even though it’s one of my top choices.” flatter them while lecturing them kinda thing i guess.

P.S. does anyone know when scholarship info from the individual colleges comes out?

I’m sure u of m will survive without you guys. You aren’t going to sweet talk them into giving you more money. That might work with a small private school, but Minnesota has more than enough smart applicants. They won’t really care if a few decide not to attend because they didn’t get enough scholarship money

mk13-well actually appealing to a college about money/classes/etc has an effect. you’re saying: i do want to go to this college, it wasn’t just a safety school. if i don’t get more money, it’ll be fine but there is no harm in trying.

goldtortoise-don’t know about individual colleges. what college did you apply to?

and if you don’t mind me asking, what other colleges in general did you apply to?

I agree it doesn’t hurt to try. I’m just saying that I wouldn’t expect anything. I’m hoping for college specific scholarships just like you guys, but I looked at the college of engineering’s scholarship listings and I think I’m only eligible for one of them. Odds are Minnesota will still be my cheapest option even if I don’t get any more money from them

I applied to the College of Liberal Arts at Minnesota. I checked out the different scholarships they offer, and it seems like they have a lot of scholarships, most $3000/yr or more…so hopefully I’ll get one.

Other colleges I applied to are: University of Rochester, Vassar, University of Maryland, Duke, Vanderbilt, Brown, Northwestern, U Penn, Columbia, Cornell, Princeton, and Dartmouth.

I know a lot of other schools I applied to are kind of highfalutin and difficult, but my family needs a significant amount of FA for me to go to college, so I could only apply to places that are need blind and meet full need or where the price is significantly cheaper and I could get merit money. So the only truly affordable schools for me as of yet are UMD and U of M.

gt- I hope you filled put the Vanderbilt scholarship app. they give out a ton of merit money. Good luck to you!

Yeah, U of M is almost the cheapest for me as well. 10k/year is still very generous+2k/year outside scholarships leaves only 5k year or so. Which my parents can pay.

U of Alabama is a full ride, so that is cheaper.
My reach schools were Cornell, UPenn, Northwestern, and Carleton. Maybe I’ll get into one or two, maybe not. My gpa is really hurting me. I also applied to USC because of the 1/2 tuition scholarship. Of course, even if I did get in those colleges (unlikely) not sure how I would pay for them. So U of M is probably where I will end up. Luckily U of M just keeps getting better

Yeah, U of M is a real option for me too. I honestly just applied on a whim, but I’m really glad I did. It’s grown on me a lot.
