Scholarships!!!

Mine were: The Gold National (4300/yr) and the Presidential Scholarship (5000/yr)
which would be added to the National Merit of 10,000/yr. I was really happy with this offer because thats like a 75% scholarship offer from the number 3 chemical engineering undergrad program in the country. Also, lots of engineering scholarships are available starting sophomore year.

Has anyone received the Distinguished Presidential?

I had to wait until D2 came home from skiing today, but the letter said, “Congratulations XXX, on your U of M scholarships”, so I was hopeful. It was wonderful news, almost 20k/yr for an OOS student, plus a 1 yr research scholarship. Can’t wait to visit this spring!

Best of luck to everybody still waiting to hear!

entomom…Awesome news!!! So glad for your D2. Hopefully she’ll love the campus when she visits this spring. D1 and I are here now, and even the chilly temps (2 degrees when we walked from the West Bank back to East Bank) didn’t dampen the spirits. Go out and celebrate. She’s definitely earned it!!

entomom… my son received acceptance packet today from UMN but his application tracker still says “we are looking forward to receiving your scores, we are looking forward to receiving your transcripts.” I guess their online system is really far behind. We are OOS (California) and don’t want to schedule a visit until we hear about scholarships. Unlike some other schools there is nothing in the acceptance letter about “in the coming weeks you will receive scholarship information.” Any idea if this is terrible news or if there is a lag time on scholarship notification?

Wolverine86: I haven’t read fully the info on where the Ist year engineering classes are held. My S has been admitted to engineering & the Honor’s college. Hopefully he does not have to walk in the frigid weather (windchill?) every day to take his classes. I am sure they have frequent bus shuttle to mitigate the commute.

Thanks Wolverine, have a great trip!

digitalmom,
I know that when D2 got her acceptance letter, that her Tracker message still said that they were ‘considering’ her application and that the letter did NOT mention anything about scholarships. Her acceptance letter was dated Jan 10 and her scholarship letter is dated Jan 18.

What’s interesting is that D2 received an email on Jan 17 asking her to answer some online questions for scholarship qualification. She did it that day and then received a confirmation on Jan 18 that they got the information she submitted. The information they asked for was just a few questions that pertained to specific scholarships (Are you Jewish? Are you interested in study abroad? Are you interested in research? etc.) Since they gave her a research scholarship (which was 1 of the 2 categories that she answered in the affirmative), they must have a very efficient scholarship system that got the info one day, made the decision, and sent out the notification the next day!

Hope this helps and that you get good news soon!

Trinity7, Wolverine, or anyone else admitted to the Honors college, what was the timeframe between being admitted and hearing about Honors?

Thanks!

Thanks for the info entomom!

I got accepted to honors at the same time I was accepted to the university

^^^ DD was accepted to CBS on 11/01/2010, and accepted to the Honors Program on 1/9/2011. No word on scholarships yet. We are in-state.

entomom…Just to confuse things a little more, D1 was accepted to Honors about a week to 10 days after her admission to CBS. With your D2’s stats I’m positive she’ll get accepted, so it’s just a matter of waiting. Notification comes in multiple forms as well. Some folks found out via Application Tracker before snail mail, some had it posted on Application Tracker after snail mail, and some like D1 only got notification through snail mail. Wish there was some consistency, but it may vary by which college they’re accepted into. If you’re thinking about Honors LLC in Middlebrook for housing, you don’t have to wait for Honors acceptance first. Since they don’t make housing assignments until summer (I believe) there’s plenty of time for the actual notification to arrive, and you can modify your preferences online after they get your App entered into the system.

Trinity7…The College of Engineering main building is located on the East Bank, and I’m guessing most of his classes will be in various buildings on that side of the river. We walked a “normal” pace from Middlebrook across the Washington Ave bridge and all the way to University Ave (roughly the “back of the campus”) and it took us 15 minutes. The bridge has a covered walkway (unheated though…at least this weekend) that will keep you out of any inclement weather for the majority of your walk. There are Campus shuttle buses that run every 5-10 minutes although we didn’t use them since we wanted to try out the worst case scenario. We heard from some folks on other threads that the buses are fairly easy to use and you usually don’t have to wait long (if at all) to catch one. We didn’t get to check out the underground tunnel system since most of it is accessed from within the various buildings and usually only available Mon-Fri according to the website, but those also allow students to avoid the cold weather most of the time if they’re so inclined. Our tour of Middlebrook confirmed for D1 that she wants to live there. It’s a great study environment with plenty of activities (but less “rowdy” parties), TA’s that come over periodically particularly for the Honors halls, and she can always take the short walk across the river if she’s looking for something a little more raucous. We’re sold!!

Thanks for the responses everybody, that really helps! I’ll have her check her Tracker account as she hasn’t since being accepted. Yes, Middlebrook sounds like the best housing option for her, we’ll hope that’s all going to fall into place soon too.

Wolverine, glad to hear the trip went well, and that your D is happy! Thanks for all of the information about walk times, etc. We’ll be taking a major mid-west trip during spring break, I’m excited to visit Minn as I hear it’s a great city.

Just checked the Tracker, there was a message that D2 has been invited to the Honors college. Duh, do I feel dumb :o.

You can use the catalog and Schedulizer to organize a sample schedule:
[Schedulizer: Spring '11](http://schedulizer.com/rTDwQS)

In this example, Wednesday is our hypothetical student’s busiest day. He has classes in Smith, Burton, Tate Physics, and KHKH (EECS). You can look at a map to see what getting to and from classes might be like.
Campus map: http://www1.umn.edu/twincities/maps/umn_tc_minneapolis_map.pdf</a>
Bus/parking map: http://www1.umn.edu/pts/maps/Library/pdf/EBank.pdf</a>
Bike/tunnel map: http://www1.umn.edu/pts/maps/pdf/BikeGopherWay.pdf</a>
Walking times: [Parking and Transportation Services - Walking](http://www1.umn.edu/pts/walking/index.html)

This is obviously just an example, but you could easily assemble your own sample schedule:
https://webapps-prd.oit.umn.edu/courseinfo/classschedule_selectsubject.jsp?institution=UMNTC</a></p>

entomom…Congrats on your D2’s Honors acceptance!! I think she’ll enjoy the campus area when you guys visit. There are lots of eating places, etc. around the fringes of East Bank campus (Starbucks, Jimmy John’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Applebees, Noodle House, several pizza places, etc.) and several around the edges of West Bank also. If we had one more day we’d try riding the Metro buses (many students use this to get to Target, Cub Foods, etc. for shopping) and light rail line (runs to airport, Mall of America, etc.) but we’ll try to do that this summer during orientation. Apparently a lot of students get a discounted U-pass ($97 per semester) that gives them unlimited use of the Metro buses and light rail system.

Thanks Wolverine86 for the trying the worst case scenario & reporting about your experience. It certainly takes courage to be walking across the bridge in this frigid (arctic) weather. My S needs to simulate a few of the scheduling scenarios to see where his classes might be held. Based on some earlier comments on this forum, I suggested to my S about Middlebrook, but it may change.

Thanks noimagination for the links for schedulizer & maps. It will come handy in selecting a dorm. Hopefully my S will follow through & orient himself to the topography.

Entomom, congrats to your D for admissions to the Honors college.

Sorry this thread is for scholarships, will move on to other one in future. Good luck to those waiting for scholarships and grants.

Is anyone going to the Gold (maybe it was red) Carpet open house for Honors kids on either Feb 4th or the 18th? It is possible that this is for Minnesota kids since it doesn’t fall on a break.

No, but I will be visiting in early March. Maybe I’ll see some of you there?

I think different colleges have their “Gold carpet weekday” on different days. Engineering have their Gold carpet event on Feb. 21 & Feb. 28. We are planning on attending the event on Feb. 21.
