I've been admitted about a week ago, when should I hear about scholarships? or do they only notify those who've received the scholarships?

Am thinking will show up in Howdy portal when awarded? Based on last year’s posts, it looks like they begin notifying in January …

If you are NMF you will hear much earlier otherwise dont expect to hear anything until the beginning of March.

Bumping this, does anyone know when we find out about scholarships for continuing students (the app that was due Feb 1st)?

^I have heard that spring semester grades go into consideration so probably not for a good while.

Well that’s strange - why would the deadline be Feb 1 if they are going to wait for the second semester grades?

No idea. That’s why I haven’t put any stock in the rumors I have heard. But as slow as TAMU is, it kind of doesn’t surprise me. Consider this, for incoming freshman the deadline is december 1st where they receive scholarship notification generally in march. So it would be fitting that they notify us in the same fashion which would be after our grades are finalized for this semester.

My daughter is a NMF and although we received part of our offer in October, we’ve been told she should qualify for more academic scholorships and we should hear mid-February. This is very frustrating since she has received her whole package from the other schools. Does anyone have any better information than this? I am told that “needs based” scholorships are not sent until after March 1.

I got an email today saying I’m getting XXX.00 for this semester. Although it’s small it’s better than nothing. I think it’s just due to being in PETE though and isn’t due to that app because of what aggieengineer said.

Yeah I am fairly sure there is no possible way A&M processed thousands of applications in a week lol

EmilyinAustin: My son is a National Merit Scholar and a freshman this year. Your child will be awarded everything promised on the honors departments’ website: Merit Plus, NM Recognition, Lechner/McFadden, President’s Endowed, Director’s Excellence. Your child may or may not get the NM sponsorship $ from A&M. The only reason that would not be awarded would be if your child was selected as a “Scholar” by National Merit; therefore, he/she would get the $2500 from NM Corp. You can’t “double-dip” and get both. You should probably hear from NM in April regarding that. In addition, if your child has been contacted to interview for a Brown Scholarship, that may be awarded as well. There are additional awards such as Aggieland Bound Scholar which are not based on need. Some of those may be awarded later. In addition, this year, many of the NMF kids had their Lechner/McFadden amount increased soon after school started because there was extra money. It has been our experience that for the most part NMF students end up with pretty much a full-ride or even more (as was our case) than a full-ride. If you have received a written offer that equates to less money out-of-pocket than what has been offered by TAMU, send it to them along with a letter. TAMU will try and meet or beat better offers for NMFs. I hope this helps. :)

Also, for NMF, the full amount is not awarded until your final status is released by NMF and you have submitted all the paperwork naming TAMU as your first choice. Good luck and Gig 'em!

By “all the paperwork” are you referring to the yellow card that we mail or fax to the National Merit Corporation?

And don’t we have until April 26th to do this? Or do they want to see the student’s name on the list that goes out March 1st?

I talked with TAMU this week regarding this. The post above from bringback Pluto is accurate. The thing that I would add to that post is that they told me that final package won’t be sent out until the end of this month. At that time they told me that you may be able to show evidences of better offer from similar colleges to seek matching grants. This process will again take a while before you receive a response. However, they are inviting and conducting interviews for Brown Fellowships.

I am not sure that you need to have all paperwork by March. You could wait until April when you have all your options available. At least that’s what we are hoping to do!

^^Thanks artdad!

I’m wondering when the students who were merely National Merit Commended (NMC) and eligible for McFadden/Lechner consideration are going to receive some notification of scholarships? I guess they need to see how many NMF accept the available dollars before they can move on to NMC and other equally qualified candidates.

I’m NOT an expert and very possibly wrong, but for non-NMSF I thought there was really only departmental money available - assuming you are looking for merit-only. There are lots of need-based opportunities, but very little merit-only.

Oh, I think there’s still a small award for Texas top-10% kids.

There are around 4-5 hundred scholarships that are not departmental. The honors college used to take care of these (Lechner, Mcfadden, Presiden’t Endowed), but I don’t know who is in charge of awarding them now. For the most part, yes only NMF will be getting significant merit aide (Full Rides).

I was lucky enough to get one of these few scholarships by having very high gpa, very very high class rank, and a ton of extracurriculars. Honestly, NMC alone probably will not automatically qualify you for a scholarship of any kind. I wasn’t NM anything.

Expect to hear by the first week of March about any merit scholarships/financial aide etc

Actually, looks like academic scholarship announcement will be late Feb! Yeah for that!!! Son’s SAT and ACT scores are the qualifiers. … plus he’s got a good resume of leadership and community service. Graduates of his high school seem to always do well at TAMU. I’m hopeful for him.

I’m sure if TAMU gives him $2-3K a year, he will decline UT. At that point, he’s secured a free ride via parental support and scholarships. To me, “free ride” means he doesn’t have to take out loans and doesn’t have to have a job in order to cash flow his college expenses. He will have to have a job for creature comforts such as going out on dates, gasoline money, etc.

The following is from TAMU’s website in the Academic Scholarship section … “***” are added by me for emphasis.

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Texas A&M University’s four-year, competitive academic scholarships are awarded by Scholarships & Financial Aid. While competition requirements vary, only one application is necessary to be considered for all the scholarships listed below. Scholarship recipients will be notified of award decisions by letter, to be mailed late February 2011. National Merit® Semifinalists who expect to progress to Finalist may be notified earlier. College or department-sponsored scholarships will be announced by the awarding unit in mid-April.

Approximately 300 four-year President’s Endowed Scholarships and 150 four-year Lechner or McFadden Scholarships, (each valued at a total of $12,000 and $10,000 respectively) are awarded annually to incoming freshmen. Out-of-state recipients earn a non-resident tuition waiver for the duration of their scholarships. In the scholarship competition, a student’s test score is only one of many components considered in the review process. Consideration is given to academic achievement in a college preparatory curriculum within the context of a student’s academic environment. Additional factors for selection include, but are not limited to, leadership, community service, special talents, and academic achievement under difficult circumstances. Scholarships are merit-based and are awarded without regard to financial need.

LECHNER SCHOLARSHIP & McFadden Scholarship

Eligibility requirements:

•Achieve a combined SAT Math and SAT Critical Reading score of at least 1300 with a test score of at least 600 in each of these components or
•Achieve a composite ACT score of at least 30 with a test score of at least 27 in ACT Math and ACT English. Students must take the writing component of the SAT and/or ACT in order for the test score to be considered.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high for any type of scholarship unless your son is NMF. Even with his good stats he is just one of the over 8000 incoming freshman many of whom have the same or better stats as your son. Texas A&M is pretty good at giving financial aid to students who can show need. However, merit scholarship monies are used to attract NMF. Although that may sound like disappointing news, don’t be too discouraged. A&M does a good job of giving some money to students who earn good grades after their freshman year.
