If I get the full tuition national merit scholarship and I already got a $20,000 scholarship, can I pay for room and board with them?

NMF scholarship + any other NEU scholarship will max out at full tuition --sorry! No R&B

Is the $20,000 scholarship from NEU? If so, I would call FA and ask. It doesn’t sound like their scholarships are stackable. If the scholarships was stackable, then the NMSC award could be used for room & board – it sounds like NEU would cut back on their amount so everything adds up to full tuition only.

*Northeastern will combine any scholarship(s) which Finalists receive from NMSC with the Northeastern award to total up to full tuition. In 2012, approximately 100 National Merit Finalists and National Achievement Finalists enrolled at Northeastern with full-tuition scholarships.

If it is an outside scholarship, then it would pay for your room/board/fees/books etc.

Did you already put NEU has ur 1st choice?? I’m still waiting for my other schools so I can choose which one to choose . . .

So just to clarify, DS was accepted with a Dean’s scholarship ($20,000) and is a NMSF. So if he becomes a NMF and selects NEU as his first choice will his scholarship be bumped up to full tuition?

Yes, I believe if he becomes finalist – it will bump up to full tuition.

For those receiving scholarships, especially NMSFs – where do you see the name/amount? My documentation includes a financial aid letter listing a “university grant” but no named scholarship. If NMSF, do you see National Merit mentioned in either your Decision or FA letters? Thanks! and Congratulations!

There was three links on DS’ page: decision letter, financial aid, scholarship award. When you click on the scholarship award, the amount and name of the scholarship was listed.

that sounds a lot like the university scholarship which is full tuition

I only see two links: Decision Letter and Financial Aid. Am NMSF. ? If you are an NSMF, do you see a third link “Scholarships” or something similar (like MTnest)? Thanks!

NEU usually enrolls 100 or so NMF – they are full tuition. Don’t know if they will start combining this group with the University scholars.

There is no separate scholarship for NMSF. If you are NMF and designate NU as your first choice, it is a full tuition scholarship.

I don’t think there will be a mention of NMSF on the award letter. If you become NMF, then it automatically bumps you up to full tuition but you need to be designated as NMF first and the info. sent to NEU.

There were a couple of NMSF who was awarded the University Scholars so they already got the full tuition. When they move to NMF – it makes no difference to their award since they received the max available already.

Thanks, MT and TomSr for your quick replies. Has anyone else been admitted to Honors and received “just” a Financial Aid award and no named Scholarship? I say “just” because a university grant is very nice, and I figured that my family’s (what I think is) middle class income would qualify me for zero FA. Am really hoping that I qualify for at least the full tuition amount, if I’m lucky enough to get NMF. Thanks! Go Huskies (just told our non-husky dog that he can consider himself an honorary Husky. He’s so not impressed.)

Thanks for the answers!!

Here’s the odd bit about NEU combining outside NM money with your full tuition scholarship: they never actually did, at least not for me. I got a $1000/semester NM scholarship not from Northeastern, and they never subtracted that from the Northeastern tuition scholarship amount. I actually have no idea where that money came from. And the letter said it was supposed to be for one year, but I actually got it for two. Ridiculously confusing, but there’s only so much I was going to fight them over being given an extra $4,000.

yup. My D is national merit semi/cum laude/ap national scholar, etc etc. Got small finl aid with honors college (engineering) and NO scholarship award. i’m figuring school strategy is these kids will dump into full tuition under national merit so why spend dollars on them now? NO Idea - just a strategic guess. Any thoughts by any experienced parents/admitted students??

I know others have said this already, but since my NMSF D was accepted with Dean’s Scholarship and no mention of NMF award, I e-mailed them late last night to ask about this. Amazingly, though they must be deluged right now, they responded promptly this morning. They do not do anything about the NMF scholarships until kids advance to that stage and notify NEU that they are such. Unlike many other schools that send award letters early on, based on NMSF, and which make it clear scholarship is contingent on becoming NMF, etc.

It is a little unnerving to me at least, not to have something in hand guaranteeing the scholarship. Especially given what seems to have transpired this year at Alabama-Huntsville that people are talking about so much on CC. We didn’t apply there, so it wasn’t on my radar, but apparently they had a guaranteed full ride scholarship for stats for some years and they reduced the amount of scholarship for incoming '13 freshman in the middle of the app cycle. People found out about it just recently and are stunned, revising their plans, but it’s too late in many cases to apply/apply for scholarships at other schools. Not that NEU would do that, but it does make one a little nervous. People say that the scholarship description on the website was clearly labelled as for '12 freshman and not updated, but still it also wasn’t removed. People had no warning.

Northeastern is extremely concerned about its imageception. Such a switch would be very bad publicity. A call to the university should ease your concerns.
