Scholarships

As a public university how generous is UVM with awarding aid. In all respects it seems like a great safety school for my athletic, wilderness-loving son--but the out-of-state tution without endowment-rich support is worrisome. Anyone know?

Are you referring to MERIT-based aid? (as opposed to NEED-based?) UVM does offer MERIT aid to OOS students. The Presidential and Trustee scholarships range from $2,000-$12,000 per year; all applicants are considered; and awards are based on stats, etc. There are also a few other awards with separate applications (for NMF students, for ex.) that can be found on their website.

My daughter has been accepted for next fall, so I don’t know how good they are with need-based aid yet (although I think this year she will qualify for little, if any).

If you are a New England resident, it is worth checking out the Regional Student Program - Tuition Break. Eligibility is based on the student’s MAJOR. For my daughter, one of the majors is CLOSE to what she was intending (same school and very similar requirements for first 2 years) so if she decides to attend UVM, she will save $10,000/year by claiming the RSP major for at least her first 2 years. Along with the 12K scholarship, it brings the COA to a reasonable amount for us. If she double majors, she can keep the RSP discount. Her brother will be in college one year after her, so our financial aid status could change (I can be optimistic anyway!) so if she really wants to get out of the RSP major after the first 2 years, it might be easier for us at that point.

Unfortunately, UVM is a very expensive state school for an OOS student…

We are in the same situation as both of you. UVM is one of my son’s top choices but unless he receives some need based aid, it would be difficult to attend. He was awarded the $12,000 merit aid scholarship but we still need some need based aid to make it affordable.

Were your acceptances Early Action? D applied RD and hasn’t heard anything yet :(.

Yes. My son applied Early Action and heard in December.

My son was also awarded the $12,000 presidential scholarship however we will need significant financial aid in addition to the merit money for him to be able to attend UVM. My daughter is currently in her sophomore year and is very happy there. She is also in the Honors College. UVM awarded her a very generous package to attend. She was awarded similar packages elsewhere, but in the end, she liked UVM the best. We are hoping that her brother is also offered similar aid as it is one of his top 3 choices. According to my daughter, UVM does offer generous aid for a select group of OOS students. It will seem like forever until the aid packages come out in late March.

Does anyone that got scholarships mind posting stats (SAT, GPA, ECs)?

I am out of state but accepted as a VIP candidate so I think I may get a scholarship. It said in my acceptance letter that scholarship info would be mailed later, but this stupid storm is delaying everything.

Do the scholarships always come with the acceptances?

Last year my daughter’s acceptance was mailed separately from her scholarship information. Her Honors College acceptance was sent in yet another mailing.

I got a $12000 presidential scholarship. It was mailed separately.

The first indicated she was accepted, a week letter the honors college acceptance and about 5 days later the presidential scholarship of 12,000/year

Even with a scholarship, OOS tuition is cost prohibitive.

Fly Me - Did you get FA package yet?
