Yeah, 12k a year. I’d like to get more money from them, but it’s still cheaper than a lot of other schools to which I’ve applied, even if I’ve gotten more from them in merit scholarships. Honestly, it’s not much more expensive than my in-state flagship (Rutgers) at this point. Rutgers gave me almost nothing.
Also, my friend who wanted to go for aerospace engineering only got 2k a year, but kind of had to go here because very few schools actually have an aero engineering major. So I’m counting my blessings.

I’d like to get more from them because if im going to go to a state school i’d want to go to UMD where I’m in the honors college. Even though Rutgers (my in state school) would have a cost of around 21k a year, I dont really want to go there and I dont think the education would be as good there. I just want to know if paying that much for a state school like maryland is really worth it.

^^^Yeah, that’s how I feel, and, with the scholarship, UMD is only $4k more anyway.

Maryland actually is a Public Ivy. The USNR is one of the more unkind rankings to Maryland. (McKeldin mall is even one of the 5 photos shown)

[Academic Ranking of World Universities - 2012| Top 500 universities | Shanghai Ranking - 2012 | World University Ranking - 2012](http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2012.html) Is the other extreme.

38th in the world, 29th in the US.

Chances are Maryland falls somewhere in the middle. I would say it is certainly a T50 school and it continues to improve.

@yocco: yes, unfortunately. I was as disappointed as you are surprised. I’m still thankful for the 12k/year, though. Can anyone give me an idea of the real COA for OOS? I read that it’s around 41k today and for some reason I always thought it was cheaper.

Does anyone know if Maryland compensates with increased need-based grants when they give a smaller merit-based scholarship? My understanding is that they usually only offer loans as an option when they offer a large merit award. But if it’s a small award, do they sometimes also offer more in need-based aid if it is needed?

The thing is, that $41k includes things like books and transportation and stuff… things you can easily make cheaper. The actual price not including that is closer to $35k or so.

Quick question: Those who have heard about scholarships: Did you also get the Banner/Key mistake email and retraction? Thanks!

Yes, my daughter did receive that email.

My S received the banner/key email and retraction, and then the presidents scholarship for $20,000 over four years.

Can we keep the discussion on topic? The thread for the. B/k mistake is elsewhere

Thank you, FastNeutrino. I would love to go to UMD but something is still missing for me. I’ve been accepted to the Scholars program but I was really hoping for Honors College. Honors admission or another small scholarship would really make my decision much easier. Has anyone ever heard of a scholars acceptance being reconsidered and turned into an honors acceptance? Is it unreasonable to expect any more gift aid with an EFC of 26k and a Presidential Scholarship of 12k/year?

Thanks in advance for any opinions

PS: the presidential scholarship came by regular mail yesterday. I live in PA

D received $32k (8K per year). OOS, Honors.

Stats: 33 ACT, AP and EC’s.

Letter came in the mail yesterday.

@azk5370: I wouldn’t expect any more gift aid, unless you happen to get more merit scholarships. The presidential scholarship already puts the COA just about where your EFC is, and UMD tends not to meet all demonstrated need anyway (except with loans).
My EFC is about $16k (which should be lower, since my dad just switched to a lower paying job, but we technically made triple figures this year. We’ll probably make ~$40k less in years to come), and I’m not expecting too much more gift aid.

$48,000 over 4 years. OOS, honors, 35 ACT, lots of AP etc.

Still does not make it the best value for DS as it would still be more expensive than our state flagship (at full price). So probably not attending.

so has everyone gotten scholarship stuff in the mail? I’m in MD and have not

same, i haven’t either…this is annoying me and it seems like the scholarships everyone has recieve is around 5-8-12k per yr…which is decent for me (since im in state); probably the next batch of scholarships will be 2k? or no scholarships at all? ughhh i hate this haha

I was admitted to the honors college, but I did not get a letter regarding scholarships. I’m not saying I necessarily deserve one but I would think getting into the honors college warrants at least a little money.

My DS received a letter in the mail with $20,000 (over 4 years) President’s Scholarship. No idea if there was any email as I was out of town on business and he only checks his email when I tell him that I think a particular college sent out emails (based on what I learn here). He had previously been selected as College Park Scholar.
