Anybody get scholarship notifications yet? I was offered a Zollman scholarship, with a STRIDE research grant, today. I was excited beyond belief, and suddenly I was considering Smith like I had never done before. Bringing me to my second question--if you received a scholarship, do you think it'll factor into your decision to attend?

I can think of very few situations that I would take over a Zollman at Smith. My D would now turn down HYS and she has "only" a STRIDE at Smith. She was going to Smith anyway (though Admissions had no way of knowing) and STRIDE was the cherry on the cake.

Stressed out as hell from mid-terms and vegging out on the sofa with non-school reading at the moment, fwiw.

Were these merit scholarships something that the applicant had to apply specifically for? I only filled out the Common Application and the required supplement.

Hi, Coquettish! I see you all over these boards.

No, you're automatically considered for merit scholarships. I think they sent them out on Friday.

Oh, that's awesome! I live in Virginia, so maybe the mail hasn't come to me yet? lol...wishful thinking! Anyways, I am so screwed on financial aid (FAFSA hates my family, basically), so merit scholarship to a place like Smith would be amazing! I want to go to a liberal arts college in New England, so right now it's pretty much between Wellesley and Smith. We'll see how the money turns out...

My d. is a Zollman, and chose Smith over Williams (which offered a financial package about as good, but with only a small fraction of the opportunities) and a bunch of other places. As you know, the Zollman comes with a STRIDE, and, in my d.'s case, they created the STRIDE position just for her (she is a composer and musicologist, and they made her the research assistant to the Five College Opera Consortium, so from day one she had access to the music departments at all five colleges, produced a production edition of the first opera ever written by a woman, and now is working on a complete publication edition. This is the kind of opportunity students at Ivies, etc. couldn't even dream about. Yale couldn't even come close.) They provided a grant for her to go to India, Cambodia, and Thailand last summer to continue with her post-tsunami work, and next year will be at Smith's study-abroad center in Florence (where she will also continue her musicological research). And prior to her JYA (and her scholarship follows her there - that's not true everywhere, even Ivies - and some, including Princeton, charge you an extra fee), she will likely take up her PRAXIS internship with a third-world development organization not too far from Bologna.

I can't say, of course, how it will work out for you, but I can tell you my d. is a very, VERY happy camper, and is within a family of them. Congratulations!

What are the stats like for girls that receive the Zollman? Do you mind sharing, americangypsy? Also, are you being considered for the scholarship (i.e. you are a finalist in the scholarship competition) or have you already received it?

Thanks for the help!

My d's were stratospheric, but that's not what got her the Zollman. She was a homeschooler, and had written an opera based on a play by Yeats, had it performed by an opera company (in a concert version), and wrote a long paper about it - the Pres. called her up to talk about it.

There is no application for a Zollman (or a STRIDE) - and the Zollman announcements are out this week.

Coquettish, my stats....http://www.************/display.php?user=americangypsy. There's not much spectacular about them compared to mini's daughter. I founded a couple of clubs, have high grades and scores, but I'm no opera writer, published author, Olympic athlete, etc.

From my understanding, if I choose to matriculate at Smith, I will receive the Zollman.

The asterisks represent the PR Stats address. I can't get the asterisks to go away.

Sorry, what does PR stand for?

AmericanGypsy...Congratulations!! HOORAH! My D was accepted EDII and received a STRIDE. We are thrilled about her acceptance, and she can't wait to get started. Getting a Zollman is awesome...good for you!

I'm not sure what it stands for, but it's a site for people applying to college to post their stats and list their results...the link is in my profile under "Home Page."

Wow, americangypsy, you are amazing!

congrats! I'm a senior Zollman (former STRIDE...the research position is for the first 2 years) and Smith's been a wonderful experience for me. Like you, I started considering it a lot more seriously once they offered me such a nice scholarship....but now, on my way out, i'm realizing how much more i've gotten here than just money.

Smith isn't for everyone. But I hope you'll come to preview weekend and see if it's for you! feel free to post here or pm me if you have specific questions.

When is preview weekend? My D has plans for attending. Get ready TD, the meeting is inevitable.

I'm freaking out...hopefully I will get something in the mail today.

Open campus is April 20 and 21.

There are only 5 Zollmans a year, right? Congratulations, americangypsy, that's awesome. Do they send out STRIDES at the same time as Zollmans?

i got a STRIDE award today, and it completely took me by surprise. i hadn't heard of it, but it sounds like such an amazing program. i am definitely going to try to attend open campus. and by the way, i'm in oklahoma and just got my letter today, if that helps anyone time-frame wise.
