Scholarships

When and how do you find out if you are being considered for any merit scholarships? I received admission for EA today, but no note on scholarships.

First of all, congrats! Scholarship Day invites should go out within the next two weeks, along with notifications about Excel@Carolina opportunities. Not sure if it’s electronic or mail this year. I know some OOS students have already received Scholarship Day invites in the mail (prior to EA notifications), since they need time to plan traveling.

Thank you!

I live in Texas.
I’m hoping for an invitation to Scholarship Days.
I didn’t get one in the mail today, so does that mean I’m not invited?

Excel@Carolina opportunities are being sent through email.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I’m applying hoping for a full ride like the Pogue or Carolina Scholars.
Is there no more chance for that now?

What is the difference between excel@carolina and an invitation to honors + scholarship day?

Excel@Carolina is basically a collection of different honor programs-- it includes assured admission into the business/pharmacy/journalism school, study abroad opportunities, Honors Carolina, program-specific groups like Chancellor’s Science Scholars… and plenty more. Some of these programs come with scholarships, but most of them don’t. An invitation to Scholarship Day means you’re being considered for merit scholarships.

How likely is it for an OOS to receive an invitation to Scholarship Day, and then actually receive an award?

@betatech I have no idea what the percentages are, but I think the chances are very good that invitees would be offered something, even if not the top scholarships. Here’s the strange part for a state-supported school: some of the scholarships offer a full-ride for OOS, but not a full ride for IS. Anyhow, congrats for being honored: it definitely means that the school wants you.

I have just learned that a student who is a Morehead-Cain finalist was also invited to Scholarship Day. I didn’t know you could be invited to both. So that indicates that the 170 invited to Scholarship Day are truly gleaned from all 17,000+ who applied.

The impression I got from past years it that if you got invited to Scholarship Day, you have a very good chance at a scholarship. You also find out very quickly afterwards if you do get one. In my daughter’s case, it was within two weeks.

When is Scholarship Day?

Feb. 20

You may receive a merit scholarship even if you do not receive an invitation to scholarship day. My D, a senior at UNC, received a $2,500 merit annual scholarship. Several of her friends also received the same scholarship. She received an unexpected letter in the mail with the scholarship award. We are NC residents, and we have concluded that UNC offers small merit scholarships to strong NC students to keep them in NC. Her other choices were OOS and the scholarship was an incentive to go to NC’s flagship university. Attending UNC and working hard has paid off. She is considering PhD offers with full funding from UC Berkley and Columbia.

My in-state D has been accepted and was a Morehead nominee. She has been told that in-state invites for Scholarship Day are released around 2 wks of being accepted and have not all been sent yet. Does any one know for sure if this is accurate or not? Thanks!

unc1957;

Do you by any chance remember the timing of the letter that she received? I realize its been quite a few years, so if you cannot, I won’t be surprised. Thanks in advance.

Has anyone that has received an invitation to Scholarship Day+Honors Carolina received an invitation to Excel@Carolina? I would think that being invited to scholarship day would qualify you for Excel@Carolina. I have a friend who was invited to Scholarship Day last year. He says that no one last year was automatically admitted to Honors Carolina and they received Scholarship Day+Excel@Carolina with Honors Carolina being one of the Excel options. Do you think that because all Scholarship Day recipients were automatically admitted to Honors Carolina that we will not be receiving an Excel@Carolina Invitation?

Well, my admitted kid (OOS, solid stats) has received literally nada…so I assume that means nothing…not even the $2500 a year taken off the estimated $53,000 annual tuition/all-in. Which makes it a tough decision for many of us in this position…

@SouthernHope‌ is that after scholarship day?
