Hi, I am a white male who lives in Tennessee. I have a question as to what scholarships I might qualify for. I am not first gen and do not qualify for financial aid. I am a senior who has a 3.174 GPA and 23 Act score. I participated in Cross Country and Track freshman and sophomore year, FCA all 4 years, International Club sophomore, Teen Court junior year, and currently a member of Beta club. I am also an Eagle Scout. I have exactly 100 hours of community service. I also got the LGBT category. Does anyone know any scholarships I might qualify for? I would really like to attend Florida International University in Miami. Any info will be good. Thanks!!!
The best scholarships are provided by the schools themselves. Have you looked on their web site?
Yes, FIU only has two scholarships and you have to have a minimum Act score of 27. I already got accepted though.
When are you starting college?
Fall 2017
Are you applying to any other schools where you actually might get enough aid to attend?
It’s fine that you were acceoted already. Will you be retaking the ACT or will you take the SAT? Without a higher score your chances of a scholarship are very slim.
University of New Mexico. I qualify for in state tuition. I just retook it and am going to retake it again next month. I would rather attend FIU though. Not too expensive
Can you study for the ACT and retake?
Yes, I retook it Saturday and I am going to retake it again next month. I want to score at least a 25.
You want to score at least a 27. Isn’t that what it wouldmtskemtime considered for a scholarship at FIU?
Yea I won’t get a scholarship there. Do any of you know though if I qualify for any national scholarships? I have all of my info posted above.
Also, I signed up on fast web and matched with 120 scholarships. Are those worth applying to?
A 27 (or a 25) won’t qualify for any national scholarships. The best merit aid comes from the college itself.
I am talking about scholarships such as being an Eagle scout and having lots of Community Service and Extracurricular activities.
How much do you need in scholarships? The things you just listed might have some small local, scholarships…for one year only. But they are not going to be large amounts, or renewable for future years.
And even those scholarships could very well have an academic excellence component.
I need at least 5,000 in scholarships for the first year. FIU is not too expensive. I plan to become a Resident Advisor in college to save on room and board. My family has 30000 saved so far for my college.
You are eligible to take out the following amount of federal loans for the next 4 years: $5500 Freshman year, $6500 Sophomore/Junior year and $7500 Senior year. If you looking at $5000 for Freshman year, then it can be covered if you want to go this way.
Thank you. You have been very helpful. I moved on from California to Florida haha.
The federal loans are available regardless of which state schools you are interested in applying/attending.
FIU is a raise.me school. Go to raise.me.com and you can earn micro scholarships. Every bit counts. Good plan to work for housing! Best of luck.
