Scholarships

Let’s talk about Davidson scholarships! This is one of those “Does anybody know the answers to these questions” forum:

When does Davidson let applicants know that they are Scholarship finalists?

Does anyone know how many people apply for the Writing Scholarship?

PS. Now that all of my applications are in, I am so excited about college! (just so you know :))

If you're talking about the Patricia Cornwell writing scholarship, then approximately 100 people apply for it (including myself). From these 100, I believe they pick a few finalists and invite them to the Scholarship weekend. They then choose 2 of these finalists and award them 20k a year.

bump

yes, I was talking about the Patricia Cornwell scholarship, so thanks! But does anyoe know when they would contact the finalists for said scholarship weekend?

I think I got my invitation in March but it could have been in February. In know that they first receive all of the applications and review them before they send invitations to scholars weekend. I am sorry my memory doesn't serve me well this evening. Congratulations on your admittance, it is a very exciting time!
Best Wishes!

My daughter has applied to Davidson and we haven't been able to visit because of the distance from our home in California. I'd like to ask anyone who has visited or knows anyone who has actually attended Davidson, what's the social life like? Is there enough to do on the weekends? Dances? Are there kids from all over the country or do they mostly come from the south? If you are from California, will it be a huge culture shock? I know the academics are great. My daughter worked very hard in high school, so she wants to go to a college where she'll have a good social life as well as a good education.

My S is awaiting Davidson's decision, but most likely will go to a larger school, as he wants to go to a medium sized school-- 4-6 thousand. The town of Davidson is very small--just a few thousand. The school is also very small, so it is a very different situation than say UCLA. Most of the kids are from the South--horrors. However, most of us no longer are into lynchings. We also now wear shoes and no longer drag our knuckles when walking. Kidding, but basically having been to all fifty states the main differences now are urban vs suburban vs rural--not so much regional as there has been so much homogenization for better or for worse. There are kids from all over the US at Davidson and also from abroad, but again I view Davidson as more of a regional school. EVERYONE that I know that finished Davidson truly enjoyed the experience. Davidson has an excellent reputation in getting kids into Medical, Law, and Divinity schools. The academics are superb. Your daughter's decision will be whether she wants to go to a school that is smaller than most high schools, located in a town of a few thousand, albeit 19 miles away from Charlotte, where there are many opportunities. If she's looking for a great education where the professors will KNOW her, Davidson is a great choice. If she's looking for a friendly accepting student body that does indeed have fun outside the class room, Davidson is a great choice. If she wants an environment where there are lots of shops, bars, restaurants and activity around campus, she should NOT go to Davidson. The faculty and the student body are Davidson's best assets. I wish your D all the best. She could learn to love saying y'all and drinking sweet tea. That does indeed still go on down here-ha. Best of luck in the process of making a decision.

fiskelove, since I live a mere few miles from Davidson, I can tell you that it has more than "a few thousand" people but it is indeed a small town with a quaint main street with shops, some restaurants, coffee house, Ben and Jerry's etc. Lots of shopping, restaurants, movies, etc. about 5 miles down the road in Huntersville. A brand new large mall less than 10 miles away.

Davidson's campus is very pretty, lots of old brick buildings, lots of greenspace in between. It reminds you of the idyllic college campuses you see in old movies. Athletics are big at Davidson. They have a confereance leading basketball team and hope to go to the NCAA tournament this year.

Academics are tough. There are lots of oos kids (based on license plates I've seen). They don't have sororities. They have "eating houses". They do have fraternities though. The nearest airport is in Charlotte. I'd say the airport is about 20 miles or more from Davidson. Don't know if they have any kind of shuttle service for students.

to get back along the lines of scholarship... but a different one.
how many people receive merit based scholarships that don't require a special application, such as the Bell?
and when do those people find out?

And please continue with the Davidson atmosphere discussion! I'm getting a lot of good info.
My mom says taht Davidson is too "southern," would you say that this is true? (she had a bad experience at boarding school in maryland, and now professes to 'hate' the south... if someone can even do that - don't take it personally).

I'm from te northeast and and Davidson is not too southerm, I haven't heard anyone complain about the southernness of the school while here. Maybe everyone realized that if they were going to commit to Davidson they were commiting to being in the south. Wheneevr there are particularly southern moments, I find it refreshing and interesting. However, people at Davidson are truly from all over, both students and proffessors alike.

hey, I actually just transferred to Davidson as a freshman and I don't think it's too southern as all. Ppl say it feels like a northern lac, only it's in the south w/ better weather! I know more ppl here from the north than from the south, tons from DC area, but maybe that's just me. But come to Davidson!!

purplerin123,
Davidson is a wonderful school. I didn't go there, but have a lot of friends who did. They all loved their time there. Jeez, the sterotypes get old. As a native southerner, I assure you that there are people of many "flavors" here. Does everyone in California surf? Are all New Yorkers fast talking, slick, wise guys? Does everyone from the midwest grow corn, speak clearly and slowly? As for your mom, despite Maryland being below the Mason-Dixon line, it is NOT considered a southern state. Rednecks are everywhere. Some of the most outstanding specimens I've encountered, were from the northeast--horrors!!!! If you want an excellent small LAC experience, give Davidson a chance. If the South sucks so much, why are we being overrun by our northern brethren, eager to escape the taxes and crummy weather? Very few who move here leave. Try it you'll like it. My motherinlaw is a New Yorker. Trust me she loves it here!! Where Davidson is geographically is a wash at worst. I believe it's a plus.

My daughter was accepted to Davidson ED. She was nominated for Belk but did not advance to the semifinal round. We want her to go to Davidson as badly as she wants to attend. We are anxiously awaiting any news on other merit award possibilities. Would a phone call to a financial aid officer be prudent (to help calm my nerves)?

Are there chances for merit scholarships once we are enrolled?

Has anyone been notified that they are a scholarship finalist or recipient? Also, have any regular decision students received acceptance letters?

fiskelove:

Judging by the dead silence, and from personal experience, I don't think anyone but finalists for the Belk have been notified, excepting that one post about the music scholarship. RD decisions come out online March 24 at 10:00 a.m. As the scholarship weekend is mid-April (post decision release) I believe that scholarship finalists will be notified by April 1. This is different from other schools who notify their scholarship finalists early, because their scholarship interview weekends are before their decision release dates. I guess the wait is on!

MusicNut, I'm hanging in there with you...I also applied for the writing scholarship and that, along with simply waiting on an admissions decision, is killer!

If you are lucky enough to be invited to the scholarship weekend, does anyone know if you have to pay your own transportation cost?

Ack, has anyone gotten anything on the writing scholarship yet?!? I'm so ansy! Is that even how you spell that word? lol

I got my official scholars weekend invite today (for the music scholarship), so I'm sure things will be coming soon!

still no word about the writing scholarship?? it's getting pretty late.
