I heard that UMBC gives out a lot of scholarships for people with good stats. I have been awarded a 5000 a year scholarship and I've heard stories from people who are there on a full scholarship now that they will give you a better scholarship if you simply ask... is this really true? has anyone done this before?

congratulations! That's great! I'm sure there are some full scholarships offered, but I don't know what your stats have to be. My d. was offered 2,500 per year. UMBC was her first choice, but I don't know if that will be enough money to sway her. I wanted to see her go there also, but now she is going to see what other offers she may get since money is a big issue for us. Congrats again....

hmalladi- I just read your post again--- I think some schools will give more financial aid if you ask, but I'm not sure about scholarship money. Sure wouldn't hurt to ask...........let us know what happens. My d. is interested in being a math major, and thought UMBC would offer the best math program in our state, (for state schools). I guess we won't know about financial aid offers until later.....

I have heard stories where you can talk a scholarship offer up or even suggest money where there was none before. My mom told me a coworker's son applied to WUStL, was accepted, and then the father called the school up and said, "OK, how much can you offer him" and the adcom pulled up the kid's stats and gave the parent a number right there. They did not qualify for aid.

UMBC does give out great scholarships. The val from last year is going there on a full tuition, board, and then change (travel, research, spending money). He was accepted to Yale and Princeton but chose UMBC. They also have a great honors program that attracts many of the state's finest kids. I know many people in UMBC's various honors programs (Meyerhoff, etc.) that chose UMBC with aid over Ivies and comparable institutions...

I think that it definitely doesn't hurt to call and ask if they can offer more. If your stats are strong, I think there is a possibility that they will raise the offer to entice you.

groovinhard- was the val from your school? I read about a similar student in the UMBC newsletter I believe- there was also an article about a similar student in newsweek magazine, I think. Maybe it's the same person.
This is what I don't understand about UMBC.....it seems to attract some very gifted students, yet the over all stats are lower than College Park and it is considered easier to get into than College Park.......

People choose UMBC for $$$$$$$$. A lot of smart kids plan to go on to professional school, so if you don't have to pay for undergrad, it will be easier to afford Harvard law ;).

But even if UMBC paid me and UMD charged me extra, I would go to UMD...haha.

Maybe a lot of kids actually see it as a plus that UMBC is a quieter campus with less sports and party-oriented kids, and more of a studious vibe. To me it screams parking lot commuter school, but, one man's trash is another man's treasure blahblah.

My son was just accepted into the Honors College and has a Presidential Scholarship ($5000/year). Would like to learn more about the Honors College. Groovinhard how did your friend find his expereince in the program? Input and advice from anyone with first-hand expereince would be very much appreciated.

I was offered the heritage scholarship - $10k a year for 4 years. i was really disappointed that i wasn't offered the premier $15k. I thought my stats were competitive but apparantly not:

STATS:
Male, Asian, Mont. County
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.68 W
SAT: 780M, 610CR, 710 W, so 1390/1600 and 2100/2400

Is there anyway I can argue/bargain my way for more $$? I was admitted to the College Park Gemstone program and am awaiting scholarship from them. I was leaning toward umbc assuming the $15k scholarship but now I don't know what to do. I was named a MD Distinguished scholar semifinalist meaning that i'll most likely receive $3k in scholarship for going to either maryland. Still, it would be nice if umbc was completely free with a little extra money.

yeah the reason i wanted to know is that i had a friend last year who applied on the last day of regular admission and got in. Then his dad called the university and asked if he would be awarded a scholarship and they pulled up his stats and just gave him a full scholarship... its not even a 15k scholarship but a full scholarship including meal plan... he went to the magnet program over at blair but his SATs werent spectacular... 2020 im pretty sure

and yeah if youre sure youre gonna go to grad school then a full scholarship at UMBC will probably be best but for me... I'd rather pay full for CP than take a partial scholarship and attend UMBC because i dont know how if i want to go keep studying that long...

Hey ebonyqueen15, I am a finalist for the Sondheim Public Affairs Program. Are you going to Selection Day on March 3rd? I wish this site was more active so I would have a better idea of what this interview process was like..

Yes I am coming for Selection weekend. Can't wait:).

For Meyerhoff, the interview consists of 3 people (a current student, a professor, and someone else). Not sure about your program's setup though.

i was invited to the selection weekend for meyerhoff, but I didn't get any money when I was accepted to UMBC. I actually don't want to get Meyerhoff though because I don't want to go to UMBC at all.(not to be rude) What percentage of the people invited get it?

afob100: i got the premier 15k scholarship w/similar stats but a much lower GPA
3.43 UW 4.17 W
1410 / 2070
Asian, Male, MoCo
ask them for more $, i didnt even get honors at CP only scholars but umbc seems tempting since its so cheap....

thanks for the reply toiletpaper. on monday, i emailed Lesley Stein (assistant director for office of aid/scholarship) explaining my situation and asking for a reconsideration of my credentials. she said she printed out the email and will be sharing it with the scholarship committee. i really hope to get the $15k scholarship...otherwise ill end up going to cp/gemstone. i like the idea of free college at umbc but i dont think it's worth paying $5-6k. i'm looking to do pre-med, thus doesnt make sense to spend too much money on undergrad. (especially for umbc vs college park education).

Same here-- I've been offered $15,000 a year plus a chance to get the Meyerhoff scholarship, but I knw for a fact that I am not going here...I'm going to UMD if worst comes to worst

yes- I have to say-- after 2 years at UMBC my daughter has decided to transfer to college park............I still think UMBC is a better school, but the social life is lacking........
