Are there ANY merit based (not need based) scholarships at Pomona?

No. Pomona is a need-blind institution and does not offer any merit scholarships. If Pomona offered them it would have the effects of:

Separating students in terms of academic ability before they arrive on campus

Decreasing the amount of aid available to students who need it

However, I don't know if athletic scholarships are awarded to recruits.

There are no athletic scholarships. Pomona-Pitzer is Division III.

it would be almost impossible to draw the lines as to who should receive a merit scholarship and who shouldn't, so all of financial aid is allocated to need, where it ought to be

On the whole there are no merit scholarships. However, I do remember from when I applied that Pomona offers a limited number of National Merit Scholarships. Not all National Merit Finalists who apply to the college get one - there is a selection process for it by the admissions staff...but I think it's a pretty modest scholarship. That's as it should be, since financial aid at Pomona is so good already.

Yea, I think only 6 ppl get the national merit scholarsip (and so you better list pomona as your first choice if you want a chance of getting one!). And pomona financial aid for me at least was the same as brown and a little worse than dartmouth - it was still really generous in my opinion, but depending on where you're accepted it may not be that great in comparison.
