Hey all, once again I'm starting a new thread. Technically this is not Dartmouth related, but you've all been so helpful that I figured I'd give it a shot.

Yesterday my mom went on this weird financial aid rampage and said I had to apply for 15 scholarships/grants/loans TODAY. A while ago I ran a scholarship search on college board, but I'm wondering whether or not these scholarships are worth it. For example, the Ayn Rand essay contest is legit, but I'll spend hours refining my essay, for what? Thousands of kids will apply for it and my chances of receiving it are slim to none.

Basically, does anyone know of any real, worthwhile scholarships? PM them to me, if you please.

Love,
Nay

Needle in a haystack odds of getting a one time $250 scholarship that every college will instantly and gladly deduct from your need-based financial aid?

Tell your mother to get real. I agree with you here.

There are some worthwhile ones, but they're more like needle in ten haystacks.

blu,

that's sooo funny that you should mention the ayn rand scholarship--

me and my dad were at borders looking through scholarship books....and we came across the ayn rand scholarship and thought 'how wierd is that' ...

"greed is good" lol...

blegh i know. but even if they deduct scholarships from need based financial aid, Dadaist, the point is, whatever I don't have in scholarships, I'll have to cover with loans, which - unlike scholarships - I will need to pay back over the next twenty or so years.

and yeah Fountain...lol...i think it's hilarious that the Ayn Rand Institute, supposedly committed to the philosophy of SELFISHNESS...is GIVING OUT SCHOLARSHIPS AND MONEY...a non sequitur if there ever was one. I was sitting there as I read its info like..."have they READ Atlas Shrugged? because I have...Ayn Rand would probably be against this..."

but I was talking to an old friend of ours that is one of my biggest role models - she was telling me that she just recently paid off the last of her loan. And considering how much she has done...she was like "absolutely worth it." (she did undergrad at Juilliard and grad at Columbia...she's an international business lawyer who now teaches at Columbia, Penn, and next year at Cornell.) I have to agree with her lol

Your first year student contribution is about $2250 (pretty much non-negotiable, turst me we tried) which Dartmouth expects you get from summer earnings .

Your aid package will consist of
Loan (maximum subsidized student loan freshman year is $2650)
Workstudy
Dartmouth Scholarship

Any outside scholarships you recieve will first be deducted from your self help aid (loans and work study) andy thing in excess will be deducted from your schoarship aid. However, outside scholarships will not reduce your EFC.

For those of you who have applied RD: When you get your aid package and another school gives you a better package, Don't be afraid to negotiate (Dartmotu even states in their financial aid package that you can request a financial review even if it means you got a better offer from some one else - you will have to show the offer). They will get back to you in a few days with a response.

as for scholarships, look for local ones... I got about $1000 this way through organizations I was affliliated with/was close with people who were. National Merit and some state-based awards are great, too. NM put my parents $2500 more out of the financial hole.
