Scholarships

Hey! I'm a rising junior and just started looking at colleges. I came across Richmond and from what I can see from their website and other info, it seems to be a great place. However, tuition is a negative for me, as I will most likely take on the majority of the debt(not my parents). That is why I'm looking at colleges where I would get some or the majority of tuition covered with merit scholarships. It is unlikely that I will get significant need-based aid because I come from a middle-class family. So I was wondering how difficult it is to get a full tuition scholarship(any one of the various that Richmond gives out--including scholars, oldham,etc.). If anyone here has gotten a full tuition/full ride scholarship, or knows someone who has, could you please post relevent stats(SAT/ACT, SAT IIs, GPA). And does Richmond look very closely at ECs of an applicant for these scholarships? Thanks a lot!

I did not receive a scholarship, but I know several people who did. One received a Bonner Scholarship for community service. She was an excellent student who was very devoted to her community. I think she did a lot with school children. Another in my hall received a full tuition of some variety, not sure which one. And she was ridiculously smart. But that's really as much as I know.

Others may be able to chime in, but it might be helpful if you posted your stats.

Here are my stats as of now(I'm a rising junior):

On practice PSATs(from all practice books) I've been getting around a 2200
On the ACT(Princeton Review course) I've been getting around a 31. I am aiming for a 33/34, and the teacher knows what she's talking about so hopefully that goal is attainable. I know its hard to predict my chances for scholarships w/out concrete information, but this is all I have in terms of test scores.

My GPA is a 4.0, but it may go down a bit b/c of some difficult classes(AP english teacher is known for not giving A's) next yr.

My school doesn't officially rank, but I'm sure that I'm in the top 5% or better.

hawk, not trying to discourage you, but scholarship competition is very competitive, although it may be a bit easier now than when I was applying now that all the scholarships are under one roof. I had a 33 ACT and didn't receive one. My GPA was weak though, because a enjoyed doing things other than school, but I had strong EC's.

Keep your grades up and try to find something this year that really makes you stand out from your competition. Approximately 1 in 15 freshmen will get a full scholarship. Best of luck to you!

UR often quotes the statistic that 1 in 15 receive full tuition scholarships. But it seems to me that 50 full tuition scholarships are OFFERED for a class of about 750 students. Since these offered students are the best of the best, and are likely offered full tuition scholarships elsewhere too, I doubt all 50 actually attend UR. It would be interesting to know how many Richmond Scholars offers are accepted.

I believe that there are alternates to the scholarship winners, so if a scholarship winner doesn't attend Richmond, someone else is chosen. But don't quote me on that.
