my D received an excellent financial package at AU… however she is left with some loans($7000) she had a good surprised last week in the mail she won some outside scholarships($1000) and she is waiting (maybe?) for more from her JROTC hs program at the end of May… my question is are those outside scholarships automatically erasing her loans? how are those scholarships working at AU? I know it depends of the school…thank you for your help.

I called the Financial Aid Office once because I needed a confirmation letter stating that winning a particular local scholarship would not replace any grant money that I might be receiving from American (thus basically voiding the scholarship).

The wonderful folks at the Financial Aid office replied swiftly to my urgent appeal, and I cite a portion of the letter they sent:

“This letter serves as confirmation that the scholarship can be used to cover the student’s cost of attendance with the assumption that the scholarship permits funds to be applied to cover expenses that exceed tuition and fees. If the scholarship awarded exceeds the student’s remaining unmet cost and/or need our office will reduce loans prior to reducing any other funds.”

So, it seems that the scholarships are first used to cover the need (family contribution). Once the need is covered, they erase the loans.

^ thank you… i like it like that! Go AU!!
